It's more so an excuse for piracy, because if there's one thing most important to moralfags it's feeling moral. "I have to download (and play) the newest Switch game, because that other game on the Xbox 360 had it's servers shutdown. Even though that game is 10 years old and available for download 400 places right now regardless of if I downloaded it or not 10 years ago at launch, what if somehow this brand new Nintendo game that sold millions of copies just disappeared overnight, THEN WOT???"
These people are allll over reddit. They can never just say "I pirate because I want to" or "I can't afford 50 games so I download shit too". It's always "well I'm preserving it" or "the developer said something mean" or "I WASN'T GONNA BUY IT ANYWAY SO REALLY!!!" etc. It's super cringe.
The "top" dudes that are doing all this crowdfunding shit to get some random obscure thing no one cares about are doing what you say though of course. They use the excuse "well, I don't want to get in trouble with _____" but me and me alone having something in my closet for the rest of my life is no more useful than if the thing was deleted out of existence. It's all cringe. I have nearly a full set of console releases, because I wanted them. This is a grey area. I do believe that preservation is important. Everything, literally everything should be saved, even something that is "contentious".
Dumping it and, I guess based on the context of the screenshots, sharing is the misstep here because certain kinds of materials are objectionable and agreed upon as something that should not be openly distributed, whether that be for moral or legal reasons. But, people in the business of preserving media are not the ones to make those judgment calls. They should be saving everything so that if at literally ANY point in the future someone else comes around with a valid reason for needing to review that content there is a person/organization they can reach out to and state their case to obtain it under special circumstances. (I'm not going to invent a hypothetical for this specific case, I'm just saying this in the broadest sense possible.)
It's why "banned books" like Mein Kampf or whatever are important to save. It's the same principle whether it's Uncle Adolf lamenting his personal struggles with DA JOOZ or a shovelware video game with mid-tier tits on some slightly underaged chink or whatever. I'm sure there are cases where someone, like a social anthropologist or something 50 years from now, might want to access either of those whether that be to understand 20th century political turmoil or the culture surrounding one of the most infamous objectification examples from the "Girls Gone Wild" brainrot era of society.

The irony is it's only "contentious" to those exact people because of that SPECIFIC version of the content. If it was a game made by a Troon, or a Troon oriented game, with the exact same content trooncoded no one would have cared in the slightest (and there would be massive backlash for anyone who did). The girl in question was also SEVENTEEN, not a child, and it was taken to trial and no one got charged with, or determined to have, child porn. There was an injunction for sales they stopped fighting, not possessing or anything else, so beyond fake outrage someone having a copy in the closet is completely irrelevant. There's also a huge difference between having something "bad", and actively seeking it out BECAUSE it's bad. I guarantee nobody who bought it went and burned it because of the lawsuit
It's a pretty good example of how serious these "preservationists" are. They want every irrelevant thing saved forever....unless it's something I don't like. "The Nigger Game" would have been shadowrealmed. All boils down to just another case of hypocritical troons wanting to play with toys.

Personally, i'm thinking of it more in a legal sense than anything, since regardless it's still legally considered CP right? Though ideally you'd want to be as uncompromising as possible, and god only knows these people do not live up the the ideals they so often espouse.

Exactly. Game preservation absolutists are the same as wishy washy free speech absolutists. I defend all free speech, and preserve all games... except the ones I disagree with or am morally opposed to. None of these people are as unbiased as they claim to be. They just want to hoard data they're interested in themselves.
This is what bugs me about TCRF in a lot of ways. Sure, a few pages are well written and researched, but do you have any idea how many games have discoveries that have already been discussed on Discord, only for them to never be added to their TCRF page? The amount of data hoarded, known to only a select few, never to be shared to the public is insane. The Halo series comes to mind as an example, the pages for that series are seriously barebones, but you'd be amazed how much content is really out there, especially post-Digsite. And almost none of it is publicly documented outside of old Discord posts from months and years ago.

Another reason I am disappointed the push for a TCRF clone went nowhere, the Cyberpunk 2077 page there has fuck all for the released game let alone the source code leaks making you have to sit through potentially hundreds of youtube videos to find out all the unused things within.

Because of the precedent about retro game discussion, I think what I'm about to post suits this thread. But fuck, this event makes me ever so more motivated to just make a thread on retro console development and the communities adjacent to it. If I do that, would anyone else here be interested?
NESDev, for those who don't know, is the western-facing community hub for developing modern homebrew/software/games for the NES and it's Japanese counterpart, the Famicom. The history goes far back into the 90s, and the community has sort of become less and less exclusively western-focused as their documentation on everything greatly brought good info for developers all over the globe. Their documentation is incredibly amazing, it covers basic knowledge of the console really well, and even stupidly obscure things like differences between models of video chips in these consoles or the entire cloud of mystery around the Famicom Modem. I'd research into this backstory a lot more as there seems to be potentially interesting info, but that's not what I'm focused on at the minute.
But today's focus is on the present day (present time!) , and much like its much more retarded sibling, GBDev, NESDev is no different from many of the otherwise forum-focused communities that use Discord as their primary community resource outside of the wiki nowadays. Although, unlike the other sites, and even TCRF, the forums end up still being quite active, with new posts and members joining all the time to ask all kinds of questions and share valuable info.
Unlike most discord servers, NESDev's rules are pretty interesting in that they have a strict "no politics" rule. Normally this means nothing, we've seen this shit before even in places like TCRF, where "no politics" means "anyone we consider alt-right or a nazi is not allowed to speak, but anyone who says support for trans people are okay". But unlike those servers, some digging shows that NESDev's moderation team actually has their head screwed in correctly and they apply this rule equally, something that is a rarity in many discords, let alone a hyper niche one like developing for an old console.
So you're probably reading this so far and going, "alright retard, what's the scoop? You've given us precursory info on the server, now what?" And with that I want to bring you to a recent development in "retro dev retardation", something XKeeper himself often is a part of (but surprisingly is not this time around). This time, it's about profile pictures and how retards in these circles love sperging out about shit that doesn't even fucking matter.
It all started when a user named "nes restrictions guy" or, their actual discord username, "hyrix" joined the discord. Here's what his profile looks like:
He has a Steam profile (Archive) linked to his account, which looks like the image below at the time of writing. Seems to include a full name and location, but Steam profiles let you put anything there, so it's probably fake for all I know.
That said, you all probably know this dude's profile with the obvious Donald Trump and Elon Musk dickriding is probably going to cause a few unwarranted spergouts. And oh boy, we have a winner here. Hyrix joined the server and asked about a simple question about what could theoretically be done with the console hardware, and so far so good.
NESDev users "Zeta" and "lidnariq" were willing to help the user out by getting him to elaborate, and Zeta talks about how they executed a similar result in their own homebrew games:
So what's the issue here? Some time passes and user "foobles" comes in and suddenly bitches about how the guy having Trump in their profile picture is a problem and how it's offending them.
Because I'm not friends with them, or they're not in the server anymore, the account I use for this doesn't seem to be able to view anything on their profile (it's completely blank). However searching around in the discord server shows they were working on a demake of Yume Nikki for the NES, among many other programmer things. Most recently, they were trying to work on a new "memory mapper" idea for the hardware, and was asking about it in another channel. It's nothing major, but it does show that they were a longstanding and contributing user to the community by making works. I'm not entirely familiar with all the users of this server, so I won't be able to elaborate much on the others screenshotted here.
Back to the main topic, foobles sperged out about the profile picture, and the first replies are by Brette, who isn't a moderator but tries to explain to them how this isn't an issue at all because they're not intentionally antagonizing anyone. foobles tries to fire back by saying this isn't true because the profile picture is visible every time they post, but Brette rightfully points out this is no different from people having "trans rights" in their bio. Brette even quotes one of the rules of the server to support their point:
Unfortunately, the troon juices prevents foobles from fully understanding the logic behind this, so they just continue bitching instead.
It should be noted that all 8 people reacting are essentially users that barely interact with the server community at all, except for one or two of them. So I'm including them here for being part of the retard squad, they've earned it:
Brette exchanges arguments with a different user, Wrymouth, as well as foobles. The situation is continuing to deteriorate. Additionally, the retarded cunt from pret and GBDev with ties to groomer pedo king ax6, Sylvie, is here to be retarded and try and claim the "tolerance paradox". Which is a false as fuck equivalency since it doesn't even justify what they think it does in the first place. I guess they don't do their homework, but that's probably a given. (Also, I see you Hyrix with the KF-style reacts!)
Foobles gets mad he's losing the argument and calls upon server moderators to win the fictional online discussion. Sylvie also gets owned by not following their own logic after getting called out by Wrymouth. Moderators finally get involved after some delay, but talk about moving further discussion out of the main discussion channel people see when they first join the server. Also, I want to give a shoutout to the "nazi bar" equivalency mentioned here as an argument, which again doesn't mean what they think it does.

Unfortunately, nobody can read the goddamn request of the moderators, so the lunacy continues in the main channel until Jared mentions it. I still don't understand lidnariq's logic. How does liking trump automatically mean he opts into everything Trump believes and says?
And yet, people continue ignoring the moderator's request and continue making shitty points to defend foobles being completely in the wrong:

A few users decide to drop their two cents into the argument after the official conclusion by the moderation team. Although it does sort of keep the drama going for a bit.

This is why we can't have nice things. Every single one of the retards continuing the argument has a holier-than-thou self-important savior complex thinking they're on the "right side of history" and saving the fucking world by sperging out about some random with an avatar they don't like.

I think I forgot to mention it in the post but the best part about all of this debate is that the user with the debated-on profile pic only did a handful of reactions and otherwise had absolutely no part in the arguments or controversy that was going on. Dude literally just sat back and watched the spergs fight each other over the most dumb shit he could have ever seen. Probably the most god tier play I have ever seen in these communities.
