In fairness, the default format for names up until I think Gen III was all-caps, so everyone was essentially screaming at each other.

When I first played pokemon as a kid, I didn't read the option of nicknaming your pokemon properly at first, so I nicknamed my Squirtle...

I got so used to it that playing early Pokemon without an all-caps name feels wrong.
