Unless the glass tube itself is actually busted, it's likely repairable and something I personally wouldn't scrap just for a project like that...

Be very careful with the high voltage. It's not just directly touching traces connected to capacitors that's the issue, look up a guide for a CRT...

I guess you could do that, but even in a 27" tube there isn't really as much space in it as you might think. The tube tapers off to the neck...
