Double check your sources dude, lol. They were in from the very beginning.

Didn't play far enough to know. I only got past the first ghost encounter and returned to the base or whatever.

Guns have always been in the game, but you are discouraged from using them because dead bodies can cause voidouts which lead to game-overs.
