Yes. A lot of active duty will go straight to reserves at end of contract instead of getting fully out.

That is largely dependent on your job and the branch you are in. Most of the time you can, other times get fucked you’re active duty ride or die.

I think that's what Paul Harrell did. He did his 4 years in the Marines before 20 years as a shooting instructor in the Oregon National Guard.
