Sims 2 is whacky in a really fun way, something that they just could not recapture in 3 and 4 tbh I cannot remember any of the households I played...

The sims 2 has a lot of dedication put into the different towns and the backstories for the npc but the gameplay can be a bit brutal sometimes.

I haven't played Sims 1 in years - I'd be inclined to say it worked well within its limitations at the time, but probably doesn't hold up now...
