2D is cheaper. The problem with it is that it takes more time to animate, whereas a 3D movie can be shit out in a year, 2D takes much more time...

Couple of reasons: 2D is way, WAY too time consuming, and time is money, not to mention the cut of scenes, even if they are on rough pencils...
