Erik's pretty weak at first but he can deal ridiculous amounts of damage later on if you give him the right perks and equipment.

Give Erik a boomerang in the early game so he can smack down big groups of weak enemies and help you get through those faster. and hoes

To go off of what @Metamorpho was saying, Erik is your metal slime farmer and he can save your entire party with some of his dagger abilities...
