I mean I get it's sad when you lose a pet, but "we had to put our 14 year old dog to sleep" is not exactly the most shocking plot twist of all time.

The problem is the eventual death of a pet is a large part of what defines our relationships with them. Also, characters needs arcs in stories...

This is why I have a hard time watching movies these days, cheap emotional manipulation annoys me more than makes me sad anymore.
