I definitely can see why an initial sketch would be useful. It helps build the foundation of the piece and can be done quickly. The lack of detail...

I usually only do the 30-60 second sketches as I have the attention span of a gnat... And haven't been to life drawing in two years and it shows. (:_(

Sometimes I have done those to try to experiment with the pose I want in the drawing or when I'm trying to use something as a reference.
