I think they fell from adrenaline or fear. They were probably unsure where it was coming from and attempting to hide.

Its called flight, fight or hide. These people chose hide and fucking died.

My interpretation is that they didn't know where the shots were coming from, so they just ducked down in place and hoped for the best.

Probably playing dead. I remember when I was a kid, they used to teach us to "play dead" if there was ever a school shooting. Which is a terrible...
