Sonic has ADHD and doesn't care for doing things in an specific order.

It's kinda dog shit yeah, compared to the gamegear world map which despite having simpler graphicsand different stages shows it as a steady climb...

I think it's more supposed to be a stylized representation condensed in a way to convey the zones in a small space and not a literal recreation...
