I'd worry about having to copy it to the PC once you were done typing. Unless you have one of those scanners with the spiffy text functions...

The typewriter is a perfect cover. This way he can keep saying HE'S WORKING ON IT and never have to show any proof.

That may work for short works, but a novel is a totally different ball-game. Imagine having to go through and revise 180 pages in manuscript...

So hey, you know there are writing programs now that have a typewriter mode just so you can have that first-draft feel of being unable to go back...
