I really enjoyed XI and its nice seeing enemies on the map. Battle wise is still traditional.

Just get 11S instead of the original 11 and play in 2D mode if you want random encounters.

Definitely. I was pretty miffed when the 3DS version of the game was denied localization. But 11S solved that by including those bits. Dragon...

The random encounters were removed in DQ8. I wouldn't call removing them dumbing down.
