same reason they say "cake day" instead of birthday they think they're being wacky and funny, they don't recognize that it's just cringe

Because they don't want to sound like they own their wives. And it is exactly this attitude that will lead to them being cucked or divorced.

I've always assumed it's because they learn everything from fiction and have no idea how real people interact.

I'd just say it's informal speech like "the little lady" or something but considering it's plebbit there's probably some "muh patriarchy" thing...
