At least a cyclops mermaid is a badass idea for a custom Monster High doll (if theres not already a canon character like that). A real baby like that, not so much.

Wasn't there one girl with sirenomelia that actually survived to 11 or so? I remember her making the rounds on daytime talk shows back when. From what I remember she was mentally normal and seemed like a sweet, intelligent kid (like that other terminally ill girl posted a few pages back) :(
Yep Shiloh Pepin spunky little thing had 3 documentaries made on her (She's very puffy in the face due to steroids and other medications):

Now I'm not a believer, but I have to wonder what amazing part of God is reflected in a hideously deformed, doomed fetus

She’s parroting the usual platitudes about “special needs children” (might look different, act different and her life span may not be long) but I’ve never heard someone say “might look a bit different” about a baby with alobar holoprosencephaly.

I’m wondering whether she’s refusing to Google what these babies look like.

What she wants is for some people to tell her “they told me my kid was going to be XXX and die/severely disabled but was born totally healthy!!” They usually find a few women who will too. They are either totally lying or were to dim to understand what the doctor was actually telling them about the fetus.

(This was particularly true years ago with prenatal blood tests that basically just gave risk ratios/odds of a particular chromosome problem occurring. So a doctor would tell a woman her fetus had an increased risk (like one in forty instead of one in 50,000) chance of having DS or some other trisomy defect. They turned this into “they told me my baby was going to have Xxx and die, but was born totally fine!” It’s more common now to hear these stories repeated as from “my mom” or my mom’s friend. The prenatal DNA tests they have now are ridiculously accurate (no more risk ratios) and ultrasounds for stuff like this show very clearly what’s gone very wrong. Undeveloped organs, growth weeks behind, brain development, etc.. aren’t things they make mistakes about.

She probably wants people tell her prayer has given some people miracle cures in these situations and resulted in healthy or viable births. I mean it’s a bleak as fuck prognosis so she’s wanting to hear anything besides you will give birth only for your baby to suffer and die. I figure extreme religious belief can provide a measure of denial and hope that gets them through this, but unfortunately it also results in undue suffering and futile life extension measures too in some cases.

Good for that guy finding a challenging physical activity and excelling at it. They mentioned a blind climber too and it occurred to me being blind might be an advantage in rock climbing because your eyes can be a distraction and looking around/down can increase stress when climbing. You’d be a very focused climber only paying attention to the most important aspects - grip security, body stability and feel - but I guess you’d have to memorize climbing route or risk getting stuck.
Of course, I then had to wonder about the field of “adaptive climbing” for the disabled because it seems there is no limit to the disability one might have or equipment that can be used. I imagined a Hartley potato kid just being hauled up in a net via pulley system and Gwen declaring her a sassychampion climber. Sort of how they have had paraplegics “climbing” Mt Everest which amounts to riding a sled mostly pulled and carried by others just so some new bizarre “1st” can be claimed for some PR stunt. (Paraplegics can use arm strength to do real climbing, but Mt Everest is not a mountain for that type of climbing.
There is research being done into these positive/negative chromosomal tests, and specifically how some cells at the 8-cell stage become the baby, and other cells become the placenta and membranes, and how some "mosaics" might indeed have had all the abnormal cells go to the placenta and the normal cells go to the baby, and there's no way to tell with a current amnio or choronic villus sampling.

p.s. I think that baby girl in the first spoiler in post #5141 is Shiloh as a toddler. I saw those programs, too; she was quite intelligent, but her facial swelling (and ultimately her death) were due to antirejection drugs because she'd had at least two kidney transplants. She had a cloaca formed (combined uro- and colostomy) and got one kidney from a parent, and another from a stranger. She did have at least one kidney but it didn't function.

Here is a link to the Wiki page about sirenomelia, which I will spoiler because it does include graphic photos. In addition to mentioning Shiloh, they also discuss a Peruvian girl who lived into her teens, and a Florida woman, Tiffany Yorks who died a few years ago at age 27. I couldn't find a cause of death for Ms. Yorks, but I heard at the time that it was unrelated to her disability.

One of my Facebook friends, a former co-worker who lost a baby mid-trimester a couple years ago, recently gave birth to a daughter with caudal regression syndrome, which is precipitated by uncontrolled maternal diabetes during the first trimester. She is still in the NICU, and was originally thought to have sirenomelia but later scans indicated that she has two legs, which are curved and don't seem to have knees.

This is going to sound terrible, because it kind of is but there is NO WAY I'd have a baby that I know is going to be super, duper profoundly disabled. I don't mean things like blindness or autism, I mean literally "your baby doesn't have a fucking brain"

It would hurt so much to abort a baby that you wanted and care about, but as a parent we have to make choices for own children that are selfless.

If a doctor is suggesting an abortion
its because your child isn't compatible with life!
I wish people would stop "leaving it up to GOD".
God had his chance, just quickly get an abortion and some therapy.
This thread pisses me off so bad but of course I'll be back 🤪

I’m not talking about amino or CV but prenatal cell-free DNA testing which has a 99.3% accuracy in studies, compared to the old risk percentage serum screening tests.

Even with the free-cell DNA tests they will have further tests to absolutely confirm the findings, but they are almost never wrong. It’s very different from the old “your baby has a 1 in 5 chance of DS” tests that caused a lot of confusion and bad communication between doctors and expectant mothers. High or increased risk was interpreted by many as a “definite Dx” when that wasn’t the case. The NIPT at least removes the risk/ratio confusion and gives very clear cut answers when it comes to trisomy Dx.

Shiloh died from a cold that turned into pneumonia.

In addition, Tiffany Yorks' legs could be separated and she had all her pelvic organs. She was not paralyzed, but did use a wheelchair for routine mobility because she didn't have complete sets of leg muscles and they were too weak for her to walk more than a few steps.

As for Shiloh Pepin's parents, that story doesn't have a happy ending either. They were separated at the time of her death (both of them said it was because of issues between them, NOT because they had a dying, disabled child) and her mother died a few years later. Her father has been arrested at least once in the meantime.

"Typically, the nose is either missing or replaced with a non-functioning nose in the form of a proboscis. Such a proboscis generally appears above the central eye, or on the back." On...the...back...did nature just go fuck it lets just put it anywhere we already fucked its face up!

"SHH (Sonic Hedgehog Gene Regulator) is involved in the separation of the single eye field into two bilateral fields."

"102 infants with cyclopia, 96 with sirenomelia, and one with both conditions were identified among nearly 101 million births."
Sirenomelia if you do not know is this:

They tend to have short bowel syndrome meaning there is no exits for what goes in and they tend to have no external reproductive orgrans.
Not to "well ACKSHYUALLY" you, but short bowel syndrome means that the small intestine is literally too short to properly absorb nutrients. It can be congenital or can happen as a result of bowel surgery, such as resection of a cancerous tumor. Whatever the cause, symptoms include chronic diarrhoea, failure to thrive, anemia, and nutritional deficiencies even when nutrient intake is normal or nearly so.

The lack of external urethral or anal opening is a different comorbidity of the sirenomelia malformation sequence, so you're not wrong at all. In females, it's also possible to have a malformation called cloacal deformity, in which the urethra, vagina, and anorectal structures fail to separate properly, resulting in a single, shared opening, which is itself frequently small or otherwise not properly formed.

I rather be corrected then the wrong info being there. So her having imperforate anus and such was just icing on the cake. She required both an ileostomy and a colostomy which was why she was so happy to have a wet suit to allow her to swim.

Poor fucking kid. You know, I've said before in this thread that I don't truly consider the true potatoes to have any meaningful life, because they have no awareness and therefore don't experience anything. I guess I'm saying that suffering is only suffering if you know it's happening to you. However, stories like the one you told make me wonder if a life is worthwhile when the person has awareness, but will basically be forced to suffer for the duration of their existence, and they understand as much. Is that really a life? More importantly, is it "better" than merely existing but being unaware? It's certainly not anything I would want for myself or anyone I love. I would have a very hard time knowing that my child, or really anyone else, was suffering and knew it. Somehow, it seems marginally less cruel to keep a child like Lola Hartley alive. (:_(

I watched a bit of the first documentary on Shiloh. At one point her mom breaks down and talks about wondering whether she did the right thing carrying her to term when it meant her daughter suffering from so many medical issues. It is probably one of the most heartbreaking things I've seen ITT.

Sounds like neither of her parents were able to cope with loosing her. Such a tragic, terrible situation all around. Hopefully Shiloh's case at least helped doctors better understand and learn how to treat sirenomelia :(

the one thing that gets my goat with the tard baby thread is...
the parents, specifically the mothers, they act like they're some special god damn warrior mommy for taking care of their tard baby.
ITS LIKE BITCH, EVEN CATS AND DOGS AND CARE FOR THEIR BABIES, YOUR NOTHING SPECIAL JUST BECAUSE YOUR DOING WHAT NATURE AND HORMONES TELL YOU TO DO.
I am not saying having a bond with your baby after birthing it being tarded or otherwise, isn't special, but give me a break, its not some damn battle to care for a tard baby given how many services you have, your no better than regular parents, you just have a potato baby, or a baby that requires abit more care in this world. this isnt undermining parents with disabled kids, its alot more challenging to raise a kid with autism or down syndromes and it can be taxing. but the whole warrior mom thing gets my goat, given the situation any normal sane mom would fight tooth and nail for their kids, but that doesn't make you special, it just makes you a parent. just like any parent, shit even most animals have that maternal instinct.

I think what it is, is more like it having worth as a human in itself to God being despite having these horrific deformities, rather then the deformities being the reflection of God in and of themselves. And the deformities are more of an ultimate reflection of what sin has done to creation (sickness, death and suffering) and how it mars what God had created as 'good.'

But that goes against the fundie teaching that God personally handcrafts every single baby in the womb.

And that every baby is a super special miracle, even hideously deformed cyclops and inside out babies doomed to suffer and die. They're actually super extra special and holy and guaranteed to be BFFs with Jesus (which means so are their parents). Original Baby Donut Steel:medallion:

That is is a toughie. I'm thinking both that He does while Original Sin also affects the outcome of the 'handiwork.'

Also the twin issues where He allows/permits stuff for a greater purpose while also allowing mankind to have free will and choice on how to react to this stuff. Some people see all of the bad stuff in the world and conclude that God is a monster for letting it happen; others see all of the bad stuff in the world and realize that God permits suffering because people need to see how fucked up sin has made the world and (especially) people, and that's why they need God.

With the fundies, it is very hard to say with them though. In the olden days such babies were pretty much considered monsters and not thought of in such glowing terms, even by religious people. Now they are, even though the Bible hasn't changed. It's interesting.

Thing is, animals will reject malformed babies even if the malformation isn’t visible externally.

I fostered a pregnant cat that wandered up and decided my home was now hers. She had a big litter of beautiful kittens and several of them were manx cats, one was especially gorgeous. A smoky grey color and super fluffy, it was such a beautiful kitten but the mama cat rejected it after a day or so. I kept trying to get it to feed and she’d if she couldn’t kick it off, she’d get up and move it to the edge of the box or drop it outside the box.

I took on bottle nursing the kitten but it was fading quickly so off to the vet we went. Turns out the kitten didn’t have a functional lower intestine and it was missing it’s anus. I had him put to sleep because he was just suffering. The mama cat knew and she rejected it so she could focus on the ones most likely to survive and thrive. I was just a soft human who saw BABY and pulled out all the stops to save it’s life (thankfully the vet didn’t charge the poor college kid).

Long story short: cats are better mothers than these mothers.
