🐱 Right-wing media's unhinged response to Thanksgiving safety measures

CatParty

Thanksgiving celebrations in the U.S. look very different this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s become increasingly clear that small and medium-sized indoor gatherings with friends and family are playing a major role in fueling continued outbreaks. As cities and states across the country respond with new stay-at-home orders and other restrictions to fight the surge in cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a set of recommendations for safe holiday gatherings and what people can do to mitigate risk for their Thanksgiving celebrations. These suggestions haven't gone over well with many figures in right-wing media, who have responded by claiming that these recommendations are part of a more widespread plot against American culture itself.

A major reason why the country is still struggling to control the virus more than eight months into the pandemic is that both the larger public and elected officials didn’t take necessary action early on. This inaction was often encouraged by conservative media outlets and right-wing commentators who spent significant portions of the year trying to undermine public health guidelines while downplaying the dangers presented by the virus.

I've noticed Media Matters never takes the time to refute anything they don't like. They just whinge about how those evil, crazy, stupid right-wingers are not accepting liberals as their moral and intellectual betters.

Media Matters is a Soros outfit. All they do is shit and sperg.

Uh, no? just pointing out denying statistics because of their sources does not mean the sources don't exist.
If we haven't been able to determine over the past 100 years how many people the Spanish Flu killed, I seriously a doubt a real-time covid death tracker is accurate.

Especially when they are classifying "died with" as "died of", and in some cases just assuming COVID-19 due "similar symptoms".

Just look up corona deaths, dont be purposefully stupid and say you can't find it. And if you just dont listen to "Big Media" and discredit articles talking about it, well that's a you problem.
Wow that's a lot of words that say and refute absolutely nothing.

Pointing out purposely misleading statistics isn't denying them. Why don't we see cases by month vs. deaths by month other than you'd find that as testing increases so did the cases but the deaths weren't increasingly proportionally.

The media peddles 245,000 US dead while ignoring that the US is a country of 328 million people, so again your super deadly, highly contagious death virus has killed 0.06% of the US population, 40% of which were in nursing homes.

Again 0.06% of the population

World wide we're only at 1/4 of the deaths attributed to the 1968 Hong Kong Flu which 99% of your Twatter shit posters and Democratic shills have never even heard of.

And the constant comparisons to the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak is silly when you consider even the LOW end of the death tally for it made it 191x more deadly than the shanghai shivers.

Why are you blaming New York for Trump’s batshit policies?
Because Florida didn't do this and only had 280 nursing home deaths vs. King Coumo's 6000+?

Objectively speaking the states with the worst death rates were all run by Democrats who were going to 'lead the way' in the fact of Trump's 'inaction'.

All of that’s been debunked. Democrat states with strict lockdowns did far better than Republican states, which have extremely high death tolls. Trump lost the election because of his retarded Covid policies. Deal with it chud.

I'm sorry debunked by who? Calling people 'chuds' and shit posting your Twatter sourced talking points doesn't make anything you say true.

The idea that putting Covid 19 patients in nursing homes was "Trump's policy" came from Coumo himself in his own self investigation where he found he did nothing wrong. You know the one a professor from UC Berkley said wouldn't pass peer review?

More to the point if it was "Trump's policy" why was it only going on in Democratic run sates like New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania?

Who exactly is New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts doing 'far better than'?

Even the Democratic dictatorship of Michigan fared far worse than Florida a state with the highest elderly population per capita in the nation.

Meh not sure why this is a problem. The ones who don't care about it can catch it and deal with the consequences along with their extended family and friends.

I hear suffocating isn't the worst way to go anyway.
Have you been watching Contagion again?
I was the only unlucky one in my family to not be completely asymptomatic, and it was just a 3 day bother. 5/5 would risk again

Uh we are? Or are you oblivious to the record high numbers states are getting everyday?
States that weren't hit hard in the beginning are getting record high numbers now--mostly the plains, where low population density mitigated the initial spread, but the virus has now taken root and is probably boosted by the normal seasonal pattern of respiratory viruses. States that had bad outbreaks earlier now have relatively lower numbers. And we are having particularly low--if not record low--incidence of seasonal influenza, which is offsetting the COVID numbers. It's not which disease gets you, it's getting got at all that you want to avoid.

And the "record high numbers" usually aren't expressed in a way normal people can process them. Excess deaths are at about 10%, of which about 2/3 are attributable to COVID. The vast majority of deaths are heavily weighted toward the 70+ population, especially those who are residents in nursing homes. Interestingly, the residual risk described above is actually higher than the risk of death in the 70+ population, which is about 5.4%. That's because the risk of death is really, really strongly correlated with being very old. So in the context of Thanksgiving, which is what we are discussing, there's practically no risk to children, young adults, and their parents gathering for a day. Children don't suffer much from COVID, and it is very rare for them to transmit it to adults, so it's just the adults we have to be concerned about. Grandparents would be at greater risk and may wish to exclude themselves, and anyone who takes care of the elderly or infirm, or spends significant time in close contact with them, should probably bow out. It may be advisable for other adults to take a long weekend before venturing back into the world, particularly if they spend time in close contact with others.

If we had a functioning media with trustworthy science reporters, this would be common knowledge and everyone would have made their plans weeks ago based on their personal risk tolerance and, if they are caretakers, their duty to their charges. But we have the media we have, and we have people reacting blindly to it, which is probably the worst possible configuration.

So, to say that something is unhinged would mean that it's hinged to something in the first place right? So what in this instance would the right-wing media be hinged to in the first place, to come off of?

Uh we are? Or are you oblivious to the record high numbers states are getting everyday?
Cases for everything go up everyday. The number of cases of food poisoning will go up tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that. The only way you can make the number of cases go down is if you invent a time-machine, and stop the virus from ever leaving the lab it came from.

"death count" is not the metric to be watching, the metric to be watching is hospitalization capacity. Let's say you're a sick covid patient--sick enough that you need the hospital but not enough to be in serious mortal risk--so now you're in the hospital, taking up a bed. And it's not just you, it's an exponentially increasing number of people like you. Once we reach total hospitalization capacity (IF we do) the deaths will skyrocket, and most probably won't be covid deaths, since "no room'' means the same to a heart attack patient as it does to avoid patient.
