Disaster Three dead in New Mexico after drinking hand sanitizer, fourth permanently blind

Three people in New Mexico have died and a fourth is permanently blind after drinking a dangerous amount of hand sanitizer, officials said.
The state’s Department of Health on Friday said another three patients remained in critical condition. All seven people “are believed to have drunk hand sanitizer containing methanol,” it said.

Swallowing methanol, when it isn’t lethal, can cause brain damage, blindness as well as nerve and kidney damage.

While authorities have not provided specific details, they suspect the string of poisonings are related to alcoholism. It’s not uncommon for people to use hand sanitizer to get intoxicated due to its alcoholic content, and it was previously banned from prisons for fear inmates would consume it to get drunk.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in recent months has recommended that facilities consider relaxing restrictions on alcohol-based sanitizer to help combat coronavirus.
The recent series of incidents in New Mexico were reported across several weeks in May. None of those involved have been identified. The news also comes days after the Food and Drug Administration urged people against using hand sanitizer products manufactured by Eskbiochem SA due to the potential presence of a toxic chemical.
“If you think you may have used or consumed hand sanitizer containing methanol, please seek medical care,” said Department of Health Cabinet Secretary Kathy Kunkel.
“An antidote to methanol poisoning is available, but the earlier someone gets treated for methanol poisoning the better the chance of recovery.”

Does that mean hand sanitizer will be sold over the counter now?

The new Lean.

who the fuck puts methanol in hand sanitizer, and why?
Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and should not be used due to its toxic effects.

Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol should seek immediate treatment, which is critical for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning. Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.
There is a big recall for hand sanitizers containing methanol in the US recently. One of the manufacturers, the one in OP, Eskbiochem, is supposedly refusing to comply.

Eskbiochem is apparently Mexican? Dammit! The sanitizer I've been using is made in Mexico, and smells very much like tequila. Must toss.

Interesting, they use Dragonballs characters on their packaging.

To date, FDA is not aware of any reports of adverse events associated with these hand sanitizer products
Time to update the bulletin!

you're supposed to use regular ethanol or maybe isopropanol. you know, stuff that won't permanently maim or kill you if ingested.
Everybody does, so it would not incur alcohol duty. The alcohol products used for other purposes than drinking are denatured for this reason. Methanol is widely accepted as part of these products all over the world.

this might be different in other countries but where i live they denature ethanol by just putting in stuff that makes it taste extremely bitter, not literal poison to kill would-be drinkers

If you can stand for even a sip the taste of Denatonium Benzoate, or Bitrex - the most bitter substance known, then you are HARDCORE and probably deserve to have whatever you're drinking.

My uncle told me that he saw some really sketchy sanitizer at a 7-11. It had a label that looked to be ran off a cheap printer. I would not be surprised at all if random yahoos are making hand sanitizer with Lord knows what in it just to turn a profit because ain't nobody finding no Purell right now.

Oh well. Play stupd games...

I've seen that as well, it comes in a small pint sized bottle like you'd find booze in.

I think it's legit, but it's being produced by a distiller.
