As for why they look clueless. I mean really. Having more gear just gives them more ways to show how clueless they are. Just look at bubba. Alright so those recordings did definitely put a chink in Raz's armor. But I must say, not nearly as much as the STRENKH GWAHMEYN thinks.
To begin with, she always emphasizes how she "was just disagreeing with him" and was "firm", but she wasn't. From minute one her tone and body language is that of a direct challenge, and her words are very obvious passive agressive accusations. Which means it is very understandable that Raz felt attacked and his tone showed he was on the defensive. She's a very clear Karen and not everyone can keep their cool when dealing with a karen.
Also the accusations of him "treating her like a child", yeah that's 'cause you were acting like a child. And his "manipulation tactics" for the most part were just very, very poor attempts at deescalation. It did however show that he sure as shit is stuck in highschool tier mentality.
Raz has definitely shown he has poor emotional control, little understanding of actual rhetorical deescalation tactics and an ego though, which ironically makes him extremely ill suited as a peacekeeper, Which fits the commune pretty well. No one is suited for what they're doing.
The womand does come out much worse than Raz though. She really is a manipulative, passive agressive karen that came in with the express intention of destroying him. I would not trust her word if she told me the sky is blue after seeing that.

Now this was all slightly before my time, my parents generation, but the hippies weren't really activists. If you drew a Venn diagram featuring hippies and activists / protesters, there would have been some significant overlap, but they weren't the same thing. Plenty of reasonable people realized the Vietnam War was unwinnable bullshit right from the beginning... that in a country of sustenance farming and general serfdom, communism was going to hold popular appeal over the bourgeoisie and landlord types. Even many conservatives in government at the time knew it was likely not going to be a war won by military might. From well before US military involvement, the "pro-western" Vietnamese governments were corrupt and ineffective shitshows... They were worthless beyond sharing the common enemy of communism.
But most hippies existed prior to and outside of pure protest movements. They were just the spoiled asshole offspring of actual baby boomers... they had everything imaginable handed to them... but didn't want to work in a factory or an office or for "the man" or whatever... they are today's CHAZ larpers. The typical "fuck you Dad!" crowd who failed to realize that Dad was a crotchety piece of shit because he sacrificed his own happiness to make a better life for his kids... That's a broad generalization.. and I'm sure plenty of dads throughout recent history have deserved the "fuck you!" treatment from their kids... but generally speaking... it's arrested development and petulant behavior.. refusing to accept the sacrifices of those that came before you and instead judging them only by their shortcomings from a position of privilege. (Goddamn I hate to use the "privilege" word, but I try to only use it in a proper context.)
At the end of the day, the modern day Antifa commie larpers will play out exactly the same way the hippies did... they will all eventually break down and get a job... As even the most mundane of lower middle class capitalist existences is clearly superior to relying on your fellow spoiled slacker in a "collective".
