Welcome to the new refugee crisis, good luck Eurobros.

Original article

Turkey has decided to no longer stop Syrian refugees from reaching Europe by land and sea, a senior Turkish official told Reuters on Thursday, in anticipation of the imminent arrival of refugees from Syria's Idlib where nearly a million have been displaced.

Turkish police, coast guard and border security officials have been ordered to stand down, the Turkish official added.

Earlier on Thursday, border town Hatay's governor Rahmi Doğan said that an Assad regime attack on Turkish military in Idlib killed twenty-two soldiers.

Earlier on the same day President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan convened an emergency meeting over tensions in the war-ravaged Syrian city.

Security sources told Daily Sabah that all ministers and senior officials, including the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) chief Hakan Fidan, were present in the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Communications released a statement on the Turkish offensive against Syrian regime forces.

It said Turkish forces have neutralized at least 1,709 Assad regime soldiers, as well as 55 tanks, three helicopters, 18 armored vehicles, 29 howitzers, 21 military vehicles, six ammunition depots, seven mortars and four Soviet-made DShK heavy machine guns.

In September 2018, Turkey and Russia agreed to turn Idlib into a de-escalation zone, in which acts of aggression are expressly prohibited.

But more than 1,300 civilians have been killed in attacks by the regime and Russian forces in the de-escalation zone since then as the cease-fire continues to be violated.

More than 1 million Syrians have moved near the Turkish border due to some intense attacks.

It's ridiculous that Europe pays for Russia being provocative. As a member of NATO, how can Turkey endanger fellow NATO countries by refusing to meet their basic border obligations?

Some updates from the Bulgarians and media

Bulgaria has very good diplomatic relations with Greece, but the accumulation of migrants to our border is unacceptable.

The deputy prime minister, defense minister and VMRO chairman Krasimir Karakachanov wrote on his Facebook profile regarding the tensions at the Bulgarian-Greek border caused by migrants.

Here is the full text of Karakachanov's position:
"The placement of illegal migrants near our border on the Greek side is a prerequisite for further tension. This is not neighborly and unreasonable!

The Bulgarian army is ready and I guarantee that a new wave of migrants will not be admitted to the country. However, let your Greek counterparts consider what action they are doing.

Erdogan and his provocations against Europe are one. It is quite another use of people as pawns on the chessboard of the geopolitical horizon in the Balkans.

It's not humane. Look at it from that point of view as well. We have all also seen reports circulated by international agencies about how Turkish border guards take and force migrants to cross into Greece. We cannot be held hostage to foreign conflicts and interests.

A new camp on the Bulgarian border by Greece is already trendy. This will put pressure on otherwise good neighborly relations. Who needs this? Bulgaria has had a clear position since the beginning of the crisis. VMRO has been decisive since the genesis of the problem. Bulgaria will not pay foreign bills! "

Construction of a new refugee camp in Greece has begun, which will be built just 8 km from the Bulgarian border , Bulgarian News reported. Excavators and machines have entered the field, where about 1 000 migrants will be built. However, the start of the construction was again met with protest by locals. They were able to break through the tight police blockade, but just before the site was stopped. The camp will be located on a terrain right next to the highway after the Tower, and according to Greek authorities, none of the migrants will leave it. The refugees are expected to be accommodated in about 3 days.

More than a dozen Greek Army military vehicles have been working today to rebuild and strengthen the border with Turkey at Kastanies to prevent migrants from crossing Greek territory, AFP reported.

"Reconstruction work and the reinforcement of the fence are being carried out following attempts in recent days by persons from the Turkish side to demolish it and enter Greek territory," a government source said.

Today, the situation along the border near Kastanies (Turkish side) was calm, where only the sound of trucks and repairs were heard, AFP journalists said.

Last week, thousands of migrants gathered behind the fence and demanded that they enter Greece, but Greek anti-riot forces prevented them from using tear gas.

On Sunday, the Greek government announced the reinforcement and extension of 36 km of the 12.5-km-long fence along the 200-kilometer Greek-Turkish border.

This extension has to be made by the army in some areas along the Evros River (Maritza), which crosses the border and where it is easy for migrants to migrate to Greek land, explained Panayotis Kalakinis, mayor of the town of Soufli, near Castanies, as well as Bulgaria.

I wouldn't be able to stop laughing for a fucking year if Turkey went tits up and got fragmented like Yugoslavia.
Overdue, really. Abandoning secularism in favor of a half-assed theocracy held together by a strongman means this only ends one way. They had massive amounts of internecine fighting before Erdogan, can't imagine how bad it's going to be once he falls. Oh well. At least we will get to see Kurdistan be a thing. For better or worse.

A case of coronavirus detected on the Greek island of Lesbos
https://www.brusselstimes.com/all-n...virus-detected-on-the-greek-island-of-lesbos/ (http://archive.vn/wtJu7)

Monday, 09 March 2020

A Greek resident has tested positive for the new coronavirus on the island of Lesbos, the hospital in Mytilene, where she was admitted, said Monday.

The 40-year-old woman, who had recently travelled to Israel and Egypt, was placed in solitary confinement on Sunday and her children did not go to school on Monday, ERT public television said.

The Greek Ministry of Health on Monday reported 11 new cases of coronavirus, which now affects 84 people in Greece, but did not mention the Lesbos case.

The Greek authorities have repeatedly expressed concern about the spread of the epidemic on the Greek islands.

More than 1,700 new asylum seekers arrived on the Aegean islands last week, the majority of them in Lesbos, after Ankara’s decision to open its borders.

In Lesbos, more than 19,000 asylum seekers are in precarious conditions in the Moria reception centre, which is designed to accommodate fewer than 3,000.

Austria, Poland bolstering Greek border guard force
Austria and Poland have agreed to send dozens of police officers to help their colleagues in northern Greece hold the Greek-Turkish border against an influx of tens of thousands of refugees and migrants being spurred on by Ankara to push through the frontier into the European Union, Kathimerini understands.

Sources on Monday said that Poland has already agreed to send 100 police officers to Greece’s northeastern Evros border region and is prepared to send more if requested by Athens. A similar understanding has also been reached with the Austrian government, with 13 police special forces officers due to arrive in Evros in the coming days.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, meanwhile, is due to hold talks in Vienna on Tuesday with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz as he seeks to drum up support among European Union leaders. He was in Berlin on Monday, where he held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Cyprus has also sent assistance in the form of 22 police officers, while the EU’s border agency, Frontex, will be overseeing a force of 100 border guards from different members-states.

All of the foreign forces will be under the supervision of the Greek police (ELAS) and armed forces.

Greek Orthodox Church Declares Coronavirus Not Transmitted by Communion
Holy-Synod-1-e1583758627562.jpg

The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Greece issued a statement on Monday referring to the Covid19 coronavirus outbreak, maintaining that Holy Communion does not transmit the virus.

The new, controversial statement comes after days of heated public debate in Greece about whether the Church of Greece should adopt more drastic measures to limit the potential spread of the disease through its liturgies and the Holy Eucharist.

”For the members of the Church, attending the Holy Eucharist … certainly cannot be a cause of disease transmission,” the Holy Synod declared in its statement.

”Faithful of all ages know that coming to receive Holy Communion, even in the midst of a pandemic, is both a practical affirmation of self-surrender to the Living God, and an apparent manifestation of love,” the Greek Orthodox Church averred. The statement will undoubtedly spark another public controversy on the subject.

Bulgaria Floods Evros River to Prevent Migrants Storming Greek Borders
At the request of Greece, Bulgaria opened an Evros River dam located on its territory on Monday in order to cause intentional flooding and make it more difficult for migrants amassed at the Greek-Turkish border to cross the river.

The opening of the Ivaylovgrad Dam accordingly resulted in rising levels of the Evros River, Star TV reported.

As the standoff between thousands of migrants and refugees on the Turkish side of the Evros and Greek security forces continues, PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis met his German counterpart Angela Merkel in Berlin and stressed that Greece and Europe cannot be blackmailed.

He pointed out that if the Turkish President wants a review of the EU-Turkey agreement on migration “which he has, himself, effectively demolished,” then he must take the following actions: Remove the desperate people from Evros and stop spreading disinformation and propaganda.

The Greek PM suggested that Erdogan should also examine other possible improvements, such as joint patrols to control the flow of migrants at the Turkish border. He also pointed out that the repatriation of those who illegally enter Greece should be possible from mainland Greece, as well as the islands.

”Greece has always recognized and continues to recognize that Turkey has played a crucial role in the management of the refugee issue — but this can’t be done using threats and blackmail,” he added.

The same way Europe is dependent on the USA doing morally ambiguous shit for its safety, or dependent on China to do morally wrong shit for their products.

The year is 2020. The greco-turk border is the stage of a important battle that can shape the European world forever. Down in the mud, tired from the fight and when all hope is lost.
"AHHH" "ALALALA!!" "*female wilhelm scream*" the greek people hear. They look for the sounds of their enemies being slain. They see one man *kpow* *biff* *opa!* as they watch this brave warrior face Hades minions, one greco boy asks "who is that man? From where does he hail?!" And a man chimes in "by the gods..it's Hercules" from the heavens comes down one of the muses and she shouts with admiration "HONEY, YOU MEAN HUNKULES"
