Fast food glass mugs - Anyone remember these?

When it comes to fast food promotional tie-ins, my three all-time favorites are the Wild Wild West Burger King tie-in from 1999, the Cardcaptors tie-in that Hardee's did in 2001, and the Anastasia tie-in that Burger King did in 1997.

I had the Anastasia train set when I was a kid, and I loved it.

Also I had no idea Hardee's did a tie-in for Cardcaptors, that just blows my mind, to think of Hardee's of all places promoting a Clamp series, the turn of the millennium era was wild.

I distinctly remember the glitter iron-on. I believe I used it on one of my shirts, but the image probably rubbed off after a few washings. Strangely enough, I thought I remembered the box looking more like a plastic spaceship, but I might be confusing this Happy Meal with a later sci-fi themed one. I think the plastic doohickey I got in my meal had the bald alien chick on it.

It seemed McDonalds put a lot more effort into their Happy Meals then than they do today. The boxes were always gorgeous and overflowing with tie-in art. And just look at all that SWAG they gave you with the first one. Nowadays they just put everything in a thin unadorned box and all you get is a plastic toy in a crappy bag. Today's kids don't know what they're missing.

Back is the 70s there was a McDonald's clone restaurant chain called Carrols.

There was one in my craphole town in upstate NY. We had dozens of their Looney Tunes glasses.

The decals lasted about a dozen cycles in the dishwasher before the colors faded. After a few months, it was just a blob, and, after a year, you had a regular old blank glass.

I'm old. Get off my lawn.

Shit, I was going to mention the Looney Tunes glasses. My parents had a bunch of them and used to put watered-down Ten High whiskey in them exclusively. Most of them got broken during drunken games of horseshoes though. Good times.

I think they might have collected those Lord of the Rings goblets at some point too---they were in the camp of people who believed they'd be worth money someday.

I remember these things. I vaguely recall having the LOTR glasses and, more recently, some Coke glasses that eventually ended up breaking.

As to why these fell out of style in part due to major licensors like Disney wanting to stray away from recognizable "unhealthy" fast food joints like McDonald's and BK and due to, ironically enough, how badly some of 'em were produced. I distinctly remember a set of promotional Shrek glasses that had to be recalled due to either the paint in 'em or the glass itself containing hazardous levels of lead.

Hell, I remember the Pocahontas glass that McDonalds had when the Disney movie came out in the 90's. The Disney ones were all plastic and I still have and use my Pocahontas glass to this day, although it's been used so often for the past two and a half decades that it's now just a dull clear plastic drinking glass that no longer has any of the Disney-related imagery on it. I'm not sure if they used decals or some sort of cheap acrylic paint, but it all eventually flaked away over the years.

That's in large part due to people being lazy and not reading the instructions, glasses with some form of paint on 'em are usually designed for hand-washing and most folks will just chuck 'em into the dishwasher.

My dad worked at McDonalds in the early 80’s. My parents still have a box full of these, Camp Snoopy drinking glasses:

He pretty much just brought home whatever stock was left since he and my mom didn’t have money at the time to buy sets of glasses.

Funny thing: the 1984 Olympics fucked McDonalds hard. They had a promotion where people got a free BigMac, Fries, or a drink, depending on whether the US won gold (bigmac), silver (fries), or bronze (drink) in a number of sports. This was also the Olympics where the USSR stayed home. America was winning all the damn medals, in just about everything.

I used to autistically collect Coke glasses and bottles. Somehow, I ended up with all four of the promotional ones from McDonalds whenever that event happened. A few were smashed or broken over the years due to various circumstances, mostly me or some other clumsy fuck dropping them.

At some point when I had to move I made a flat descision of fuck this hobby, picked one glass that had sentimental value, picked a handful of the bottles that were the coolest or had sentimental value to me, and left the rest to be disposed of. My gift to the other Coke Collectors of the world.

I had most of them, but all cracked from stuff as simple ice hitting the glass when dispensed from the refrigerator. They did plastic ones for Coke floats around the early 2000s, and my father destroyed most of them by pouring hot tea.

If you want good official Coke tumblers, you specifically have to buy the Libbey sets (but the individual ones from the dollar store). For years, I wanted to know where Denny's got their glasses from, and found out but forgot.

I remember drinking from a McDonald’s Disney themed glass as a child. It was a commemorative for either Walt Disney’s 100th birthday or Walt Disney World’s anniversary. Maybe both?

My parents would occasionally collect the glasses (and the Teenie Babies. We have multiples of every single Beanie from the 2000 run. It was great fun at the time finding them, but like others on this thread they are absolutely worthless. My dad keeps insisting the lil Maples and Buckinghams are worth something despite me informing him otherwise.) We just completed our Shrek Forever After set literally the day before the lead (or was it cadmium?) recall.

Steak and Shake once sold Coke glasses in different colors, but they were plastic. That’s the last time I remember seeing this sort of promotion. I think this was 2009/2010?

About 6 years ago or so; AMPM (gas station in the USA for any non-yanks) was having a World of Warcraft thing and instead of their basic paper/styrofoam cups, you could get a plastic cup with WoW themes on them. One had Illidan, Arthas, Death Wing, and... ... ... I don't remember the fourth one; and not sure where my cups are to check.

And way back in the mid 90's, when Batman Forever was coming out; some organization out there had a set of 4 collectible mugs. That was a long time ago so I can't remember who was blessed with having the rights to sell them; but had all 4 of them at one time. The thing I remember is the Two-Face mug's handle was molded like it was a coin flipping through the air.

Different side of the country, so we call it Carl's Junior over here; but they never had that out here. I'd be all over that shit if I saw anything Anime/CLAMP related being marketed.
