It's usually more of a family get-together type of event. Most likely he's either hosting the reunion dinner or his family is local if he's planning to be to work the day after New Year's Day.

Question for our people who know more - if someone isn't listed as an attorney of record for any parties on the case, is there any reason why their notice of vacation should be taken into account for scheduling? Seems like if you have multiple law firms for multiple parties, you could always find someone in the office at one of the places who's going to be out of town and could use that to try and prevent a lawsuit from going forward in a reasonable manner (not necessarily suggesting that's what's going on here - just wondering if there would actually be anything wrong with the opposing party filing something that would fall within the dates of Orozco's fairly lengthy vacation.)

I think Orozco's notice is more for appeals notices and such since he may be on the billable hours part of the lawsuit aka just in case COA wants to talk to him. Better assume the Appeal can happen anytime instead of months from now when it comes to Vacay notices.
