Comicsgate Hangers-On and Drama Whores - A thread about some guy who's mad about Star Wars and the neckbeards obsessively stalking him

Yeah, I love Jeff! I don't know what to say about it...he seemed confident in his plan to produce and fulfill the book, and frankly ComicsGate has dozens of creators doing the same thing. Jeff went to a printer who probably produces and ships advertising magazines, and they treated his comic book like one.

I checked in with him a couple of times to make sure he was okay with the process, and he assured me he was fine and had it handled. So I let him be.

It's extremely embarrassing for him and definitely his backers are upset. He's going to have to find a solution.

I've talked about it three times on various streams, and on my own livestream tonight. So I don't know why people are saying I'm being quiet about it. It's awful. I feel for him and every one of his disappointed backers.
I’ll give you that because I’m listening to your stream about it now. So, my bad but nothing on Twitter?

Jeff talked up Stealing Solo to a point where he was always going to struggle to meet expectations. He has some ability as an artist but he's not top tier by any metric. Realistically this was never going to be a book that exceeded industry standards.

He took his eye off the ball when it came to production. Perhaps he could invested a bit more money in that side of things. He certainly needed to be investing more of his time in the minutiae of the project. He was the one who needed to be asking the fulfillment center the fundamental questions that one should ask when you are printing and mailing-out a $20 comic internationally. He needed to be getting responses to these questions in writing. Let's hope, for his sake, that he did.

If baffles me that he didn't spring for printed proof copies. You need to see your work as your customers will see it. I was also surprised that he didn't reach out for help from people within ComicsGate and brushed-off offers of advice and assistance. Is that pride or complacency? Either way it's a misstep.

To call Jeff a grifter is a stretch. This prat-fall is the result of over-confidence and mismanagement, rather than some Machiavellian scheme to line his own pockets. He has built up a successful YouTube channel. The controversy around Stealing Solo will impact on his reputation and may harm future growth on the platform. This comic was the culmination of a lifelong ambition for him and it fell at the final hurdle. He is going to have to come to terms with the fact that he bears some responsibility for this. It is going to be an expensive and humbling lesson for him. One that he will be forced to learn in public.

There are a few vexing questions: Was the back cover meant to be blank or is this a printing error? I would have thought that, even a black back cover with a few pinprick stars on it would be preferable to plain white. If you were really ambitious, you might extend the conceit of the front cover and attempt to mimic the back of a carded Star Wars action figure.

We know from the updates on Indie Go Go that Jeff was happy with the PDF he had been sent and had cleared the book to be mailed out. I am not clear on what the arrangement was in regard to sending out signed copies and posters.

I have heard talk of lawyers and lawsuits. I think this is chest-beating. Lawsuits are incredibly expensive. If he has an eye towards crowdfunding legal action, then I don't think people are going to be all that forthcoming. I would view it as throwing good money after bad.

This is a very sad state of affairs, but perhaps to be expected. ComicsGate has entered a winnowing period where we are getting a feel for who can deliver on a project and be trusted with our money. It's about much more than simply writing or drawing a good book.

Wenger, ever oblivious to his own contradictions, posted to Twitter his thanks to his CG brothers and sisters for replacing the “Marxism” of mainstream comics with a movement based on “loyalty and meritocracy.” There is little place for loyalty in a meritocracy. All one has to do is look at how this “movement” has treated Jeff’s failure versus Doug’s success to see which concept dominates those who chose to gather under the CG umbrella.

The last week say witness to the growing disparity between those who operate within the #Comicsgate community and those who chose to criticize it. Doug Tenapel posted a video of himself overseeing the printing of his book and signing autographs. Meanwhile, Jeff of World Class Bullshiters, posted an apology video for the sorry state in which is comic arrived.

Doug Tenapel remains a popular target of those close to Ethan, being knocked out by Sweetcast in the latest WC approved meme. Whereas, the CG critics posted memes poking fun at Jeff for his failure to delver on his promise of a comic which exceeded industry standards. Jeff’s video claimed that he did not know at the postage and address were going to be printed directly on the comic itself which was subsequently placed in the mail. That begs the question of why the back cover was blank. For that matter, where was the promised ashcan which was part of the $50k stretch goal.

As has been said many times from those within, Comicsgate is about loyalty. You can see it in the WC livesteam where Micah Curtis has his loyalty tested by Ro demanding he call Marvel Comics writer Heather Antos a “cum dumpster” in recognition of their friend, Richard C Meyer.

As for merit, the comic creators who consistently deliver the product they promised in the time frame they promised are almost without exception the ones critical of #Comicsgate: Myself, Tim Lin, Doug Tenapel, and George Alexopoulous. Each of us serving as a regular target for War Campaign for daring to speak the truth; #Comicsgate has little concern for merit at all.

Sweetcast may be able to break the #Comicsgate pattern by delivering a well written book, with good art, on time, without engaging in the dog pile tactics of those within #Comicsgate who seek to tear down the ones who show them up. Hence why he was featured prominently in the latest video meme; previously, War Campaign has not had kind things to say regarding Mr. Stoker.

I'm glad I didn't decide to back the trash fire known as Stealing Solo. It's insane to see people throw money at books that look like garbage. I mean check out that for "kids" Wizard book. 9k for a book that looks like a kindergarten art project. Stop backing and rewarding trash people.

Jeff always seemed like a nice guy.

He took $50k+ of people's money, though, and it took him a year and a half to produce the equivalent of a junk mail flyer.

So yeah he seems like a nice guy, but he's totally incompetent and pocketed a bunch of money. Somehow comicsgate is supposed to protect him from critics...?

His comic was supposed to be signed. If he had actually bothered to sign the books like he was supposed to, he would have seen the low quality and the blank back cover (which he claimed was supposed to be black, not white).

He was also supposed to deliver an ashcan along with the book (REMIND YOU OF ANYONE ELSE?). If there was an actual ashcan included, that would have required an envelope to contain both the comic and the ashcan.

So here we see several more examples of how cost-cutting measures compound on themselves, backfire, and doom a project. If Jeff had bothered to actually fulfill the signing or the ashcan, the main printing/shipping problem would not have occurred.

I guess he's a nice guy, though? Like that matters.

Meanwhile we have Weird Uncle Ethan still hoovering around Kiwifarms and Twitter, doing constant damage control while still attacking Doug under false pretenses. Ethan took someone's word for it that Doug charged $60 for the box that EWJ was shipped in; that's completely false. $60 might have been some international shipping charge for one person with a big order, but in reality people who just paid for domestic shipping got the box and got extras at no additional "$60 service charge" or whatever the fuck Weird Uncle Ethan is strawmanning this time.

Gee you'd think that instead of all of these 4-hour livestreams he could have maybe taken a half hour out to actually teach Jeff Hicks how not to ruin his comics career before it stared. Great guidance, Uncle E, you sure know how to help young creators and grow the industry.

"Jeff said he didn't need any help."
Oh, and you actually listened to him?
That's a change in behavior for you, because you have had many customers on your IGG page saying that they need help getting their Cyberfrog comics already (people who did not order the ashcans even), and you haven't responded to any of those complaints.

What do you expect, though, from someone who actually wants to gatekeep comics AWAY from children, because children don't have enough money for him to steal?

"Comics haven't been for kids in 50 years."
Uh, until 5-10 years ago comics were the most-read part of every newspaper in the world, and three generations of children grew up with Peanuts, Garfield, Calvin & Hobbes etc. Today they're growing up with memes, most of which are literally comic panels.
I guess that's not "comics", though. Tell that to Bill Schulz and the creator of Pepe.
What a small-minded view of the medium.
"Comics" are something you pay nearly $100 for, then wait a year and a half to read a 40-page pamphlet that doesn't even tell a story. Great model. The idiots giving you money deserve to be taken advantage of; I'm glad you're taking advantage of them. For the rest of us, you're free lolcow entertainment.

"Kids don't need to read comics."
That quote will live on in infamy alongside the one where he said $25 was the fair market price for a 40-page comic.

Fact! - EVS lied about the doodlings looking like Joe Quesada art.

Fact! - The doodlings looked like it was done by a 5 year old.

Fact! - EVS helped Hicks scam people out of $52,074!
Fact! - You probably can't prove any of this with captions and sources just like all the other times people like you come here to screech at this guy. I'd love if you could, but I'm doubtful at this point.

And Ethan's just as much of a moron as the others are if they can't get that kids can and do love comics, they can even be the main mover. But it won't be so unless you change the medium; pick out and use what works, which in this case is manga.

My kids can afford comics just fine. Maybe if people weren't such terrible parents they could give their children chores to do to make money. I guess it's fine for them to grow up to be whiny little bitches like Ethan. Every comic fan I've ever met started when they were children. Keep on gatekeeping though. You make people like Wade seem rational.

Actually he is right about the first two points. The third one you can debate.

I've actually seen the video where he states that.
Look at Comic Book Hut's latest video for the proof. Its right at the beginning of the video.

Stealing Solo is just another black eye to the CG movement because of the YouTube click crew. This is just another book that somehow made thousands with art that looks worse than what you would see on Tumblr.
There are much better artists and books under the CG banner that get nowhere near the recognition because they choose to do other things rather than spend hours making videos, and they look a hell of a lot better than stealing your money solo.

One of the reasons I never really followed CG all that much is the incessant internecine bickering. Most of the writers and artists involved are genuinely talented, but the drama you find behind the scenes at, say, Marvel, doesn't seem to be quarantined solely to SJW circles, it seems to run rampant even among independent creators.

Perhaps most artists are just inherently volatile people.

I've never taken it all that seriously either, though my primary "objection" to it, on an artistic level as a writer myself is that it seems to be comprised of and catering to people with extremely banal tastes.

But let's not forget what he is, a 45 year old slob who strikes out when it comes to personal health and grooming. Is not able to get out of bed and work on a daily basis without editors holding him to deadlines.
Ethan Van Sciver is a 45 year old who never made the transition from child to adult. If he liked something at 5 or 15, he still likes it. At 45, he still chases Star Wars looking for the same highs he got as a child. He still likes superheroes but he wants superheroes to reflect his tastes in his masturbation phase of childhood, not his pre-masturbation phase of childhood.

The same dumb thoughts Ethan Van Sciver had as a child, he has today. He loved Joseph McCarthy then, he loves him now. As a dumb coward in his 20s he harassed comic book fans online. He took money up front for art commissions and was too lazy and unreliable to complete the work. As an old, grey haired fat slob, he is no more capable of doing jobs he's paid upfront to do. His reaction to those who are angry about getting ripped off is to say the person who is angry he lied to them is just a hater.

You will find no progression in Ethan Van Sciver. He is not a man. Just a dumb kid who thinks he has things figured out.

He went from being a kid to drawing comics. His adult years have been reading comic book scripts and making doodles from them. And he lacked the mental ability to even do that right. He does everything half assed, like a slob. He signs his little Nazi signature to his doodles but the real signature is his terrible work. It's always flawed and contorted. Just like his views on politics and even the comic book industry.

Yes, he doesn't even understand why the comic book industry contracted in the 1990s and why it does not grow now. It's not SJWs. He uses the term 'SJW' to validate his hate and jealousy. Kinda like how the guy at work who never gets anywhere says all who do are just ass kissers.
Ethan Van Sciver hates first, then marginalizes those he hates into groups. He is jealous of those who have been truly successful in the comic book industry. But he can't just say that. It's puny. So he repackages his hate into "I hate them because they want politics in comics and are killing comics and Star Wars."

Once repackaged he can then attack those he is jealous of and not look so small and pathetic. "He's attacking them for the good of the fans!" Yeah, he puts fans first, right? What happened to that when it was his turn to serve the fans? Hmmm?

Every expression and act from Ethan Van Sciver is childlike. And there is always manipulation. He's a sociopath, drunk on the power of gossip and lies.

And when it comes to complex, intellectual thought, reasoning and common sense, well, the 45 year old with a mind that hasn't grown since he began masturbating, only forms kiddie thoughts you would expect from a dumb teen who thinks he's got everything figured out.

So the Teen-45 year old thinks comics are doing better without kids. HAHAHAHAHA!

Here's the deal, comic book sales rely in the iconic characters owned by Marvel and DC. Marvel and DC icons like Superman, Batman and Spider-Man are cartoons. For generations kids loved the cartoons, kids grew into adults, left the cartoons behind for the new kids and sales figures were huge. DC Comics cancelled books in the 60s and 70s that only sold 300K copies. Animation was produced in the 60s, 70s and early 80s that was directed at kids. Superhero toys were directed at kids.

But in the late 1980s things began to change. Frank Miller and Alan Moore got acclaim for bringing adult themes into cartoons. Mixing super heroes with stories about porn, rape and so on. The kids from the 70s and early 80s did not want to leave behind the cartoons they loved as kids, as the cartoons were handed off to them. As others saw Moore and Miller receive absurd praise and fan followings for doing stories that showed cartoons would not be so perfect in the real world, more people followed, trying to replicate their successes. Comics went from being called "Funny books" to being repackaged as "Graphic Novels". Toys would be called "Collectibles". And now adults could hold on to their childhood favorite cartoons and not be so embarrassed.

Publications like Time, Newsweek and USA Today covered the change in comics. It was hailed as "cutting edge", "comics aren't just for kids anymore", "comics are growing up". And the word "Dark" became very popular with fans. Cartoons for kids were now "Dark superheroes for adults".

DC and Marvel went fucking berserk trying to capitalize. Like a virus, it spread through all their comics. And they saw money in creating "Comic book stars". So comics book writers and artists names were billed above titles. Young dumbasses like Rob Liefeld were high on Rambo movies and porn and wanted more blood, guts, tits and ass in comics. Anything Frank Miller did in 'The Dark Knight Returns' or Alan Moore did in 'Watchmen' was deemed so cool it got the green light from Marvel & DC as smaller publishers.

By 1990, Marvel & DC sales were no longer driven by those wanting simple entertainment. They were driven by spectators trying to invest in the next Watchmen or The Dark Knight Returns. Spectators had replaced the kids. Young adults had replaced them too. So now, the kid audience was almost completely gone and Marvel & DC had trapped themselves into satisfying spectators and young dumbasses who liked Rambo and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.

Eventually the spectators realized they were being had and the spectator bubble burst. Creators Marvel & DC had allowed to turn their cartoons into comics unfit for kids, took off to do their thing in self publishing. So all Marvel & DC had left was to continue targeting teen boys who wanted comics to be a mix of Rambo, porn and later Mortal Kombat.

Marvel & DC tried luring back old readers with 'The Death Of Superman', 'Knightfall' and other comics with shock gimmicks but only achieved temporary success because they could not make kids want comics again. And they were and still are trapped into producing comics for that niche group of kids who are now in their 40s and 50s.

Ethan Van Sciver, being an absolute imbecile, is so stupid that he thinks comic book publishers should bear down and go after customers with more T&A and blood & guts. In his shortsightedness, all Van Sciver can do is look back to his own childhood experiences and think what interested his dumbass, interests others. That is where he always goes wrong, by in some way basing everything on what he personally wants or received. His disastrous Indiegogo campaigns are to him "A great success" because HE got what HE wanted. And if comic books are what HE wants, then he believes they must be good.

It is doubtful that comics could ever become what they were prior to the mid 1980s when the industry made itself just for spectators and guys who can't grow up. Comics cannot compete with other forms of entertainment. However, if they were to ever recover the kid's market and create new fans for the future, Marvel & DC would probably need to have a meeting and at least agree to undo the changes made in the mid 1980s when they chased away the kid's market.

They would need to stop letting sexually repressed, pedophile adults act out their sexual fantasies in their comics. Stop with the 'Comic Book Star' crap. No more Bendis, Waid, Simone, Loeb, no more creator names on covers. Actually, they should do CGI comics so you don't have great artists sometimes and bad artists like Ethan Van Sciver other times.. The comics would go from script to storyboard to CGI, just like today's animation.

And they would need to start over. No complex origin bullshit or multiverse crap. Cut the characters down to basics as they do in animation like the Justice League series. No more writers trying to look like 'Master Artisan' by writing rape stories or ideology into cartoons. Just entertainment for all ages. Let cartoons, be cartoons. And stop cocksuckers like Moore, Miller, Waid from trying to make cartoons in Shakespeare. And stop other cocksuckers like Rob Liefeld and Ethan Van Sciver from trying to make comics reflect their own bad tastes.

Comics that appeal to ALL AGES can sell more than comics that appeal ONLY to old fucktards like Ethan Van Sciver whose sick minds never developed into that of an an adult.

Will this make sense to minds like that of Ethan Van Sciver? Minds arrested in the state of a teen who just discovered masturbation? Of course not! For it to make sense to Ethan Van Sciver it must come from the basis of Ethan Van Sciver getting what Ethan Van Sciver wants. As if a child wanting candy, he sees good as Ethan getting what Ethan wants. Bad is Ethan not being pleased.

That is the sad fuck's version of black and white thinking.

holy fuck, how long did it take you to write out all this?

Will this make sense to minds like that of Ethan Van Sciver? Minds arrested in the state of a teen who just discovered masturbation? Of course not! For it to make sense to Ethan Van Sciver it must come from the basis of Ethan Van Sciver getting what Ethan Van Sciver wants. As if a child wanting candy, he sees good as Ethan getting what Ethan wants. Bad is Ethan not being pleased.

That is the sad fuck's version of black and white thinking.
I was wondering where you were going with your essay until you started talking about McCarthy and calling EVS a nazi before you even got halfway through it. Yeah, you tipped your hand way too soon there, champ.

The funny part is that since Proving Grounds is fucking dead-dead and the bar to make a thread on Ethan has lowered SIGNIFICANTLY, these screeching tards are still too mentally challenged to actually nut up and make one.

I mean, there's some actual stuff like how he wants to control CG as a trademark, how his fans want to suck wolf dick, how gay ops surround him, how he needs to peacock relentlessly even though he ain't done yet (though this is fading), and backing that Jeff guy and shilling for his cheap pile of shit scam, but fuck if they can be bothered to prove the assrage they have being valid.

Damn son if you be expecting any of us to look at that without a tl;dr you're smoking crack.

I trimmed it down so you could follow it. Too much info to be shared to EVS' simple minded kind.

It's common knowledge he is a McCarthy nutsack and his signature is modeled after a swastika. Isn't it interesting how this thread can sit dead for days until someone calls out EVS. So are you his Butt-Boy or EVS in the old, fat flesh?
