Abolishing whiteness has never been more urgent
by Mark LeVine

Noel Ignatiev never set out to be a hero. His goal was quite the opposite: to be a "traitor" to a race that for much of his life would not accept him and whose inherent toxicity, he believed, would permanently impede the possibility of the United States living up to its ideals.

On November 9, the historian died, leaving behind a body of work explaining why and how Americans ought to abolish "whiteness". As the country faces a surge in white supremacist violence and rhetoric, there may be no better time to engage with - and embrace - his ideas.

Becoming white
Ignatiev was born and raised in the same progressive - and for some, radical - American Jewish tradition that moulded Bernie Sanders (who was born less than a year before him). He grew up in a mixed-race area of Philadelphia where he witnessed the extent and depth of anti-black racism. In the late 1950s, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania, but dropped out after three years and focused on leftist activism.

He took up a job in a steel mill, becoming a labour organiser among the mostly African American workforce before completing a PhD at Harvard (where he was accepted despite his lack of a college degree) in 1995.

Ignatiev was a member of the last generation of Jews who experienced what it meant to be considered less than white in the US - at least until the present generation experienced a sharp rise in anti-Semitic attacks after the election of Donald Trump. He understood the malleability of race and its reality as a social, ideological and political, rather than biological, construct.

The majority of Jews embraced whiteness as it became more readily available to them from the 1960s onwards, believing it offered unprecedented protection against any possible resurgent anti-Semitism. Ignatiev, however, saw the solution to Jews' problems, and those of the US at large, in abolishing it.

Abolishing whiteness is different to merely challenging "white supremacy" or "white privilege". What Ignatiev understood was that for most self-identified "white" people there is, a normally invisible, boundary to how far they will go in working for true racial equality. Unsurprisingly, those boundaries become apparent around issues - such as equal access to education and jobs - that might threaten or merely inconvenience the advantages and privileges of whiteness.

A recent example is the controversy surrounding a school desegregation plan in the city of Columbia, Maryland - a town established in the 1960s as an integrated community symbolising the "Next America". The opposition to the plan reveals how those who enjoy privilege will behave in ways they would otherwise consider racist when they are called upon to potentially sacrifice some of that privilege to benefit long-disadvantaged African American and Hispanic communities.

This should not surprise us. While whiteness and its avatar, "Western civilisation", have for centuries declared themselves to be the epitome of Enlightenment and freedom, historians have demonstrated not only the historicity of whiteness and its contingency, but that whiteness emerged directly and almost exclusively through its connection to imperialism/colonialism, slavery, genocide and modern-day racism.

We need only think of all those smiling white faces in photos of lynchings across the American south - what WEB Du Bois described as "the writing of human hatred, a deep and passionate hatred ... on the pale, white faces" - to understand how the ontological pleasure gained from participating in the humiliation and extermination of black people is the most enduring identifying marker of whiteness.

One would have better luck taking wetness away from water - at least you can freeze it - than to rip the racism out of whiteness. Even the US's first black president could not freeze the racism that has always defined this country. Instead, despite his best efforts, his presidency unleashed a torrent of renewed racial animosity and policies, all embodied by the ultimate avatar of white nationalist masculinity, Donald Trump.

Abolishing, not reforming whiteness
Ignatiev's historical argument to abolish whiteness was developed most fully in his 1995 book How the Irish Became White.

Since the English colonisation of Ireland, the Irish had been considered less than fully human. But Irish immigrants to the US were accepted as white in the era before the civil war as many supported slavery and violence against (free) black people. It was a transformation that enabled them to achieve better jobs at higher wages and be accepted as full citizens in what was still a juridically white republic.

The book was part of a slew of research by scholars that began to emerge in the 1980s - including scholars such as David Roediger, Theodor Allen, Karen Brodkin, Steve Martinot, Cedric Robinson, Nell Irvin Painter, Alexander Saxton, Matthew Frye Jacobson, George L Mosse, David Theo Goldberg, and Alana Lentin - who explored the idea of whiteness as an ideological, psychological, social and political construct and set of governing mechanisms, rather than a biological or even determinatively cultural one. What all of the analyses had in common was a focus on the intersection of race, class and gender in powerfully hierarchical ways over long periods.

But what set Ignatiev apart from his colleagues was his belief - no doubt drawn from his years as an activist rather than just an academic - that the construct of whiteness not only should, but could be done away with.

It was not the kind of neoliberal "post-racial" society imagined at the start of the Obama era that he sought, but the emergence of a truly progressive set of identities that would enable the alliances necessary to fight against the larger capitalist system that required whiteness as its cornerstone ideology.

These arguments are laid out by Ignatiev and other like-minded scholars in the journal Race Traitor, established in 1993 "to run the film backwards, to explore how people who had been brought up as white might become unwhite".

With a masthead that declared "Treason to whiteness is loyalty to humanity", and whose first words in its first issue urged readers to "Abolish the white race - by any means necessary", it was obvious what the political and scholarly aim of Race Traitor would be.

In 16 issues over a dozen years, scholars from a variety of disciplines unpacked how whiteness emerged and why and how it could be "abolished", based on the belief that "until that task is accomplished, there can be no universal reform, and even partial reform will prove elusive, because white influence permeates every issue in US society, whether domestic or foreign".

Beyond 'anti-racism'
Ignatiev urged those able to identify as white to "be reverse Oreos". "Defy the rules of whiteness - flagrantly, publicly ... Challenge behaviors that reproduce race distinctions."

He was critical of simple "anti-racism" efforts precisely because they "admit the natural existence of 'races' even while opposing social distinctions among them".

Instead, his abolitionist path was based on a realisation that "race itself is a product of social discrimination; so long as the white race exists, all movements against racism are doomed to fail".

Reading his work and that of his colleagues, it becomes clear that almost every element of white identity that one might want to preserve is already contained in other identities - ethnic, religious, national, cultural - which do not inherently marginalise and dominate others and whose positive characteristics are diminished rather than augmented by association with whiteness.

Perhaps most importantly, Ignatiev helps us understand that "the white race is a club, which enrolls certain people at birth, without their consent, and brings them up according to its rules". "For the most part the members go through life accepting the benefits of membership, without thinking about the costs. When individuals question the rules, the officers are quick to remind them of all they owe to the club, and warn them of the dangers they will face if they leave it."

This is exactly what is happening in the city of Columbia, as even more recent members of the "white club", such as those of Indian and East Asian heritage, have joined in opposing desegregation efforts, despite the historical and ongoing prejudice against them.

Decolonising and dewhitening
Although he did not specifically engage decolonial theories, Ignatiev's writings are clearly sympathetic to and have been cited by decolonial theorists, who were among the first to understand the ongoing coloniality of power, even in the postcolonial era.

When Ignatiev's approach is added to the work of decolonial theorists, intersectional feminists like Kimberle Crenshaw, Holocaust scholars like Zygmunt Bauman and the focus on necropolitics by Giorgio Agamben and Achille Mbembe, a strong theoretical foundation for a truly liberatory analysis of contemporary racial capitalism and chauvinistic nationalism (whether "white", Hindutva, Zionist, "Chinazi", Russian or myriad other exclusivist identities) emerges.

So, too, do the deep links between these racist nationalisms and the support for environmental devastation - or worse, for mass violence against perceived others justified in the name of a zero-sum struggle for ever diminishing resources.

Finally, Ignatiev's wholesale condemnation of an irredeemable whiteness and the identities that flow from it helps us understand how, in Achille Mbembe's words, whiteness "became the mark of a certain mode of Western presence in the world, a certain figure of brutality and cruelty [and] singular form of predation" that turned all those labelled as black into "a community whose blood stains the entire surface of modernity".

Writing in Issue 3 of Race Traitor in 1993, regular contributor and anti-racist activist Christopher Day argued that "the grip that whiteness has on the consciousness of the majority of people in this society is an immediate and persistent obstacle to building any serious movement for radical change in this country. It is not a simple matter of doing the right thing, because whiteness obscures in our minds what the right thing is."

James Baldwin put it even more succinctly: "As long as you think you're white, there's no hope for you."

Today, we would add that as long as 150 million Americans define themselves as white with all the expectations, privileges and violence that accrue to that identity, there is no hope for us as a nation. Of that, as Noel Ignatiev spent his life demonstrating, there can be little doubt.

If anyone should be treated less than human at all, then it should be race-baiting chucklefucks like Mark and Noel who benefit off of or simply have the perverse desire of having groups of people at each other's throats in perpetuity.

More intellectual diarrhea from the mental toilet bowls that are "whiteness" students.

Next.

And why the fuck are so many American Jews in academia pulling this "fellow white people" crap? If they consider their Jewishness equivalent to whiteness, they shouldn't be doing this "whiteness bad" bullshit. If they don't consider their Jewishness equivalent to whiteness, then they should just come up and say so.
They've been doing it for years, an not just in academia.

You Know You’re ‘Not Racist’, But How Do You Become Anti-Racist? - Et al.

You don’t see color. You don’t have a racist bone in your body. How could anyone accuse you of racism? Being a racist would be the most odious stain on your character, an incorrigible shame. Being accused of racism would be libelous. You would’ve voted for Obama a third time if you could have!

Sound familiar? These are the tapes played by the mind of white fragility. Unfortunately, they do nothing to solve racism. In fact, they enable it. But they have strong roots, and can be hard to dig out. So how do you replace those tapes with truly antiracist ones? How do you make the leap from being passively ‘not racist’ to becoming an empowered antiracist? Let’s ask some Black people!
There’s No Such Thing As ‘Not Racist’

First of all, as Ibram X. Kendi points out in How to Be Antiracist, there’s no such thing as ‘not racist’ or ‘nonracist.’ There’s only racism and anti-racism. Most of what we call ‘not racist’ is actually passively supporting racism. Any action not directly opposing racist policy or working to dismantle racist systems is giving them a pass. But don’t get overwhelmed just yet. Let’s look at Kendi’s helpful definitions of some basic terms:

Racism: racist policies and ideas that normalize racial inequities.
Racial inequity: when racial groups do not have equal footing.
Racist policy: measures that sustain racial inequality; also known as ‘structural racism,’ ‘institutional racism,’ or ‘systemic racism.’

Notice that by Kendi’s definitions, a person cannot fundamentally be racist. People support racism, or do racist things, or express racist ideas. But the terms ‘racist’ and ‘antiracist’ do not describe a human being at their core. These terms describe actions, ideas, and most of all policies. None of us are racist, so saying ‘I’m not racist’ doesn’t mean anything. Almost every one of us at some point does and says racist things, regardless of our race.

This is important and empowering, because while we can’t change who we are, we can correct what we say and do. We can also correct policy. An antiracist is not an enemy of white people, but an enemy of white supremacist policies, actions and ideas.

Dr. Crystal Marie Fleming supports this position in her book How to Be Less Stupid About Race. While most of us were taught that racism was, alas, a dark part of America’s past, or something that still exists only in the overt hatred expressed by white nationalists, racism thrives today. It’s pervasive in America and globally, through existing structures and policies. “White supremacy is not just neo-Nazis and white nationalism,” Fleming writes. Rather, she says it’s “a system of power designed to channel material resources to people socially defined as white.”
A Fake Scientific Concept That Became a Real Social One

‘Socially defined’ is a critical element here, because the concept of race is a European idea based in pseudoscience. Race is simply a set of shared physical features. There is no clear boundary between races, and no biological basis for classifying human beings into different racial categories.

However, since Europeans and their descendents have built global systems to benefit people with certain shared physical features, and oppress others with apparent differences, race has become a social reality. It defines how we’re socialized and how we move through the world. It influences our access to information and resources, our safety when encountering law enforcement, and whether or not we get side-eyed suspiciously at Whole Foods every single time we have to buy groceries.

Even though the original concept of race is a pseudoscientific fallacy, its influence persists. “Mainstream scientists, geneticists and medical researchers still invoke race and use these categories in their work, even though we have been told for 70 years that they have no biological meaning, that they have only social meaning,” says Angela Saini, author of Superior: The Return of Race Science.

But the social meaning is important. Being colorblind, or ‘not racist,’ might have meant something in a distant epoch before racist ideas governed the world. But now, race has become a social and political reality that we must confront and deal with. We cannot ignore the fact that policy favors people who look a certain way, while punishing, disadvantaging, incarcerating, and killing people who look another way.

As Amandla Stenberg’s character Starr tells her supposedly ‘colorblind’ white boyfriend in The Hate U Give, “If you don’t see my Blackness, you don’t see me.” To ignore race is to ignore racism. That’s why the action (or usually inaction) of self-identified ‘nonracists’ is actually white supremacist behavior: ignoring race maintains a status quo that benifits white people—including white Latinxs, white Natives, and white-passing mixed-race Americans. Race shouldn’t exist. But socially, politically, it does. The burden is on its beneficiaries to confront and dismantle it, because we are the ones who can do so safely and efficiently. Because it suppresses those outside of it, racism has to be torn down from the inside.

Making the Leap From Passive Racism to Active Antiracism

Being ‘not racist’ is passive, while antiracism is active. A passive racist (that is, a ‘nonracist’) will listen to their uncle’s bigoted jokes or tirades. Perhaps they’ll frown uncomfortably or harrumph in disapproval. But they’ll still allow the uncle his ‘free speech’ and make space for him to share his toxic influence.

An antiracist will put a halt on it, and call the uncle out for his white supremacy. An antiracist will take the opportunity, and seize the moment. They won’t allow that toxicity to spread unchecked. An antiracist will use their platform to spread antiracist ideas and dismantle racist ones. They’ll challenge the assumption that Uncle Racist’s behavior is normal. They’ll use their access to white spaces to try to educate the uncle, who is more likely to listen to them than to Black people saying the same thing. If the uncle persists in spewing racism, the antiracist makes it clear that the uncle will become a social pariah, and follows through by making him unwelcome in the future so he doesn’t have a place to spread his ideas. In doing so they’ll set a different example, inspiring onlooking family members towards antiracist action and accountability. The uncle may be lost, but the niece isn’t. Black people can’t reach these family members. Only we can. And the same goes for predominantly white workplaces, campuses, and friend groups.

The goal of a passive racist is to ignore race, to distance themselves from whiteness, or to draw attention to how enlightened they are. The goal of an antiracist is to confront racism, to support and protect nonwhites, even at their own expense. A nonracist feels guilty about white privilege. An antiracist uses it.

In nonwhite spaces, antiracism requires selflessness. It requires us to listen to Black people and other POC, to validate their voices and suppress the white compulsion to debate. It demands that we let them have the mic and the spotlight, uninterrupted. That we validate their opinions, experiences, and ideas, even those that feel abrasive or scary to us. It delegates us to carry out the actions prescribed by Black people and POC to bring about their version of a more equitable world, regardless of our own opinions on the matter. We must become transparent vessels for the Black agendas of equity and justice. We must expect no thanks, applause, or material benefits for this.
Practicing Silence, the Ultimate Test of a White Man

As you become a practicing antiracist, you can expect those looping white fragility tapes to flare up and fight it. Silencing our opinions and biting our tongues is notoriously difficult for people socialized as white, especially white men. We believe our opinions matter in every instance, on every topic. We believe in a marketplace of ideas, that discourse is holy. We want to play devil’s advocate. But antiracism asks us to please shut up, and just listen to nonwhites.

Second to arguing, our strongest impulse is defensiveness. We must halt that, too, and open our hearts with vulnerability. Why are we defensive? What racist ideas are still hiding in there? How are we trying to protect our own white fragility? Once halted in its tracks, the defensiveness becomes a gift, because it draws our attention to the parts of our minds where white supremacy still lingers. In addition to doing the external work of antiracist praxis, we can do the inner work of asking these questions, and examining our discomfort. Sitting with discomfort reveals volumes, and gives us pause to reflect on how uncomfortable it must be for nonwhites to move through an invalidating world, without the privilege and safety we get to take for granted. So practice silence in nonwhite spaces, and when encountering nonwhite perspectives. See what it brings up.

To recap: make racist policies and ideas your nemeses. Don’t retreat into passive ‘nonracism,’ enjoying the benefits of white supremacy and hoping nobody rocks the boat. The boat is racist. Rock it. Be vocally antiracist in white spaces, and silently receptive in nonwhite ones. Become an agent of nonwhite agendas. Stay active, even as a listener. This is the beginning of antiracism in both its inner and outer forms. It’s the proving ground that will give us the antiracist skills we’ll use to change policy and dismantle the systems built by our colonizing, eugenics-obsessed ancestors, the systems we’re still unjustly benefiting from today.

Agreed. The only ones who aren't black that might also get a pass are Native Americans and brown Muslims, and only because there's few actual Natives left to challenge it and the horrifying effects that colonization had on the various indiegenous tribes makes excellent fodder for their "White Man Bad" rhetoric.

Muslims will be given a pass solely because of the War On Terror and the migrant crisis in Europe, and only if they are Kurdish or Arab. White Muslims (Albanians, Chechens, Bosnians, etc.) would still be considered racist because they're white.

The good news is that the crazier that this rhetoric gets, the more likely it will alienate normies here in the United States and then pendulum effect starts kicking in.

All this racism towards whites while simultaneously screeching about Nazis is like a self-fulfilling prophecy mixed with the boy who cried wolf. Eventually people get tired of it, and now that these clickbait mills are losing money and don't have gibs to back them up like before, they'll lose their influence.

Meanwhile, I spotted that article about Jewish privilege. http://www.unz.com/ejones/jewish-privilege/ ( http://archive.ph/4XMxX )
What is Hate Speech?
In keeping with the so-called “Christchurch Call to Action” which flowed from a meeting of government officials and internet giants on May 15, 2019 in Paris, Facebook issued an internal document entitled “Hate Agent Policy Review,” which, according to Breitbart, which received a copy from a source inside Facebook, “outlines a series of ‘signals’ that Facebook uses to determine if someone ought to be categorized as a ‘hate agent’ and banned from the platform.”[1]

The guidelines were simultaneously draconian and incoherent. You can be designated as a “hate agent” if “you praise the wrong individual, interview them, or appear at events alongside them.”[2] Hate agent status is evidently contagious because Facebook may designate you as a hate agent if you associate with a “Designated Hate Entity,” like the Englishman Tommy Robinson. You can also be designated a hate agent “merely for speaking neutrally about individuals and organizations that the social network considers hateful.” Facebook tagged someone in October of last year simply because he gave what they considered was a “neutral representation of John Kinsman,” who is a member of “Proud Boys,” a group which Facebook does not like and does not want you to like. So, in order to absolve yourself from any suspicion of being a “hate agent,” you have to hate what Facebook hates.

The main way to characterize someone as a “hate agent,” however, is to show that he engages in something called “hate speech.” On June 20, 2019, YouTube banned the video “Owen Benjamin Finding Logos with E. Michael Jones,” which had originally aired several months earlier on March 21. That interview was one of fourteen videos that YouTube banned from the E. Michael Jones channel on YouTube in June. As with other thirteen, the only explanation YouTube gave was that the video violated its rules concerning hate speech, i.e., “We also don’t allow any content that encourages hatred of another person or group of people based on their membership in a protected group.” YouTube’s notice did not identify the offending hate speech or the “protected group.”

The terms “hate agent” and “hate speech” are equally vague; however the latter term is easier to define because its origins are clear. Hate speech is a creation of the Anti-Defamation League, which touts itself as “the world’s leading anti-hate organization.”[3] Like the analogous term “anti-Semitism,” hate speech is any utterance which Jews at organizations like the ADL find offensive. As the incoherence of the Facebook guidelines have shown, it is impossible to understand the current wave of internet censorship unless we see it as a Jewish operation. This becomes apparent when we look at how the press is defining (or misdefining) the whole censorship/deplatforming issue. A recent article in Summit News attributed the banning of “Natural News, which had 2.5 million followers,” to “the fact that Facebook is now ruthlessly enforcing its far-left ideology across its own platform.”[4] The fact that many if not most Jews espouse a far-left ideology is undeniable, but it is also beside the point because “hate speech” is not a political designation; it was created by the Anti-Defamation League to silence speech Jews’ did not like.
Lest anyone think that is not the case, consider the “ADL Statement on YouTube Policy Changes to Reduce Extremist Content,” a June 5, 2019 press release in which the ADL praises itself for causing the just initiated YouTube purge of “hate speech” channels and videos and then demands more action by YouTube and other tech companies:
“Online hate and extremism pose a significant threat — weaponizing bigotry against marginalized communities, silencing voices through intimidation and acting as recruiting tools for hateful, fringe groups,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO and National Director. “That’s why ADL has been working with technology companies, including YouTube, to aggressively counter hate on their platforms. We were glad to share our expertise on this and look forward to continuing to provide input. While this is an important step forward, this move alone is insufficient and must be followed by many more changes from YouTube and other tech companies to adequately counter the scourge of online hate and extremism.”[5]

White genocide is an insane fevered conspiracy theory that only exists in the minds of inbred Hicks.

Therefore, we must eliminate whiteness.

That's quite a take...
I do not understand the logical sequence of "whites are becoming a minority lmao" to "whites are biggest threat"

What the fuck?

This stuff is going to alienate a lot of white people. I know it has for me. I used to be an uber lefty, but I initially got redpilled on the whole Israel situation. I would try to bend over backwards to carefully word any criticism of Israel to make sure it was clear that I was against their government policies, not against Jewish people or their religion. Didn't matter. Any criticism, no matter how mild, automatically got me the anti-semite label. After a while, being called something I wasn't made me not give a fuck about being called that anymore. I didn't start out anti-semitic, but I would have to own that I am at least a little bit anti-semitic now simply because I got tired of being accused of it as a means of stifling debate.

Same thing is happening now with the white people stuff. I'm more than willing to acknowledge the history of oppression that has existed in the world -- but I'm not taking personal responsibility because I didn't do it. I'm willing to acknowledge racism still exists in society today, but I'm not personally engaging in it. Blaming me for it and saying all white people are racist would be like me saying that all black people are drug dealers and the drug problem in this country is entirely their fault. It doesn't work like that. Collective guilt and punishment is actually a war crime. It's not cool to condemn an entire group based on the actions of some of the group. America is supposed to believe in rugged individualism. The only actions I'm responsible for are my own. Eventually, white people will get to that "fuck it" moment and decide okay, now we're racist for reals. This whole "white people" stuff -- especially coming from white people themselves -- is re.tarded. If they were saying this stuff about anyone other than white people, it would be called out as the racist ranting that it is. They'd be cancelled as nazis in 2 seconds flat. Whether white people have power or not is irrelevant. If I call Beyonce a nigger, everybody is still going to call me a racist. And Beyonce has way more $$ and power than I do ...

Any action not directly opposing racist policy or working to dismantle racist systems is giving them a pass.

Did you brush your teeth this morning? Scratch your chin? Take a shit? YOU FUCKING RACIST!
