I still have zero idea what this means after reading the thread. Someone downloaded a German shooter’s autistic manifesto, so the US federal government wants all their information? But Null can’t because the website stores information for only 24 hours?

I’m kind of dumb, so a simplified explanation would work best here.

The issue is not that criminal investigations should not happen, the issue is that what happens now frequently amounts to fishing expeditions. They don't know if a crime has been committed but for one reason or another they think one MAY have been committed, or they just really want to nail someone to floor. In which case they go rooting though everything to try and turn up something they can use to build a case. A case for what? Well they don't know. But they will find "something", of that you can be sure.

These are the sorts of practices the 4th amendment is supposed to prevent. A frequent and recurring problem had been that when a citizen pissed off the great and the good, they would immediately start digging through the persons shit to try and find something they could use to charge them with. And since nobody is a saint you are always able to find "something". The 4th Amendment requires the government to actually know what it is they are looking for before they go looking for it. If you suspect someone of murder, you get a warrant to search their house for the murder weapon, or collect DNA, and you can explain to a judge why you reasonably suspect this person of Murder. What they are doing now though is simply showing up at your house randomly to check if you got any dead bodies in it. And if they happen to find your weed stash as they do it, well bully to you.

My post was on response the that particular example and how information can be requested in general rather than this particular case. I agree with your post and that this is a fishing exercise. I was referring to cases where an actual crime had been committed and it was already known that the user was involved.

While that's true, I'd imagine it'd be very difficult to press charges against Kiwifarms under ukrainian or russian jurisdiction, for instance.
I highly doubt any eastern-european court is going to give two shits about mountain jews or screeching faggots trying to press charges about "muh doxxxxing".

That may come at the expense of other speech protections, but could be worth it to protect against US government overreach.
Which very much seens to be the case in this instance.

@Null: You talked about your intention to move to Poland a while ago, that's another thing where relocating "Lolcow LLC" could prove beneficial.
Running a small business/tech startup is one way to get a permanent work/residence permit in Russia, for instance.
I'd imagine they have somewhat similar requirements in Poland; that might be something worth looking into.

Point is, there are places well beyond US jurisdiction, and countries that likely wouldn't grant an extradition request over some arbitrary bullshit charges.

im guessing its a way to hold big tech accountable or to compel them to hand over identifying documents, because if the docs weren't uploaded to 8ch or somewhere else besides here, it means they changed hands behind closed doors (my guess is discord)

maybe they're trying to identify any groups these people may have been a member of and if there were any financial transactions that may have supported the shooting (first pdf says he was given some bitcoin by someone which is probably what is at issue)

If it's a legitimate subpoena then presumably the thing to do will be give up the information. It's an unfortunate consequence of operating a public-facing website in current_year.

I kinda agree with Josh that it's not really a hill worth dying on (re: "fleeing" from the US). KF can't respect user privacy more than the user respects it themselves. If you're phoneposting on 4G and uploading shooter documents, what can Null really do for you at that point?

So presumably the US said 'Hey, there's a warrant out for this guy in the US for sexual assault of a minor and he's fled to Taiwan. Can you arrest him and deport him back to the US?'

Yup. I bet if US legal enforcement contacted Taiwan law enforcement they'd get whatever they asked for because good relations with the US are vital to Taiwan not getting overrun by the Chinese. And literally everyone in Taiwan knows that.

Ukraine is in an analogous situation. Worse actually because the Russians and their proxy forces already occupy Ukrainian territory.
