Fast food glass mugs - Anyone remember these?

I was recently reminded of something strange and have been strangely fascinated by them.

Does anyone remember those fancy sculpted glass mugs fast food restaurants used to sell as movie tie ins? Here are some examples

Of those 3 I still have a couple of those Lord of The Rings Goblets.

My question is, when did this trend start and when did it end? And how many movies had these?

The last one I can remember is the Lord of Rings one, which might have been the last for all I know.

This might be a really stupid thing to be interested in, but oh well.

My parents had a couple of the lord of the rings ones. I think they still have them somewhere.

I grew up drinking out of some of the much older versions of these. IIRC Flintsones from the cartoon era, and the dinosaurs in particular were featured on them along with McDonalds logos. Early 80s or late 70s production, before the ones you've got pictured. My parents still have them around for sentimental value. I am often brought to contemplate the ever worsening obesity crisis when I look at how small the mugs are. 6 ounces at most i'd say.

Had both the Flintstones and Batman mugs as a kid. I remember my mom was obsessed with collecting all the Disney glasses McDonalds put out as well. Had almost the whole set I remember.

Yes, there were also glasses with decals like this.

Not as cool as the sculpted glasses in my opinion but still pretty cool.

Yes, McDonald's had many Disney tie in glasses, I still have this one celebrating the 25th anniversary of WDW.

And A&W still comes out with a new rootbeer mug you can buy each year for like $5. I guess certain ones are collectable.

McDonalds Australia semi-regularly gives out glass (or possibly acrylic) Coca-cola-themed glasses as part of a promotion.

Back is the 70s there was a McDonald's clone restaurant chain called Carrols.



There was one in my craphole town in upstate NY. We had dozens of their Looney Tunes glasses.

The decals lasted about a dozen cycles in the dishwasher before the colors faded. After a few months, it was just a blob, and, after a year, you had a regular old blank glass.

I'm old. Get off my lawn.

I'll admit, I'm a sucker for a cool looking glass, but it takes a bit more then a cool logo to draw me in. The glass itself has to have a cool design to it as well to get me to want to buy it, like the Flintstones mug. The way the mug is sculpted to look like it's carved from stone and the handle looks like it made from bones is rad. I mean, it is obviously plastic, but you gotta appreciate the extra mile they went for the design.

They were big in the 80s and early 90s when everyone was all about collectible bullshit. Some of you guys probably don't remember but everything was about collectables because everyone thought they would be worth money some day. Beanie Babies are the largest example of this phenomenon. It's cheap, stupid, gimmicky garbage that everyone was convinced would make them rich in the future. Make no mistake, it was mostly adults buying this shit.

Occasionally you would get a kid like me who packed one in their lunchbox.

It was just a fad. The new fad is "artisan." Everything has to be packaged in an artistic box and be 100% Angus beef with an "artisan" bun. The Angus double quarter pounder with cheese is fucking $8 at McDonald's, compared to the plain "hamburger" which is like a buck fifty. I'll give you a hint: if it comes off an automated line in the millions to be delivered to the most popular restaurant on the planet, it isn't artisan.

I have, and still regularly use, that Batman mug. Most recent glassware promotion I can think of is back when the first of the new Star Trek movies came out, there was a four-glass set available at Burger King. Of course I got them all like a nerd. Fuck yeah.

You gotta have variety phanner. Today for me was an artisan parmesan and cracked pepper bagel with churned butter and delightful cream cheese. Yesterday I whipped up a whimsical breakfast sandwich with farm fresh egg, american cheese, and thick cut smoked bacon on yet again an artisan bagel. Saturday = chocalte chip buttermilk pancakes with organic maple syrup and fresh squeezed orang juice. Most breakfasts are accompanied with some excellent free trade Colombian coffee with artisan creamer and cane sugar.

As someone who really loves A&W they have merch you can buy in their stores. You can get the Root Bear bear for around $10 and one of their glasses. I would find them cheaper on ebay instead though, if that's something you really want.

Anyone else remember Welch's Tom and Jerry grape jelly jar glasses? All my white trash relatives had those in the 1980s.
