I’ll admit that some of the hipster restaurants can have good food, but for the price you pay at them, it usually isn’t as good. Restaurant elitism is a weird phenomenon in the US. It’s also funny because I’m sure there’s an overlap between the hipster restaurant elitist and the unabashed socialist.

Part of it is the city scum lifestyle.

In big cities, especially in San Fran, LA and but ESPECIALLY NYC, there are few if no real grocery stores and the few places that DO stock a decent selection of products are super expensive "Whole Foods" type stores.

Combined with the amount of time it takes to make high end food from scratch and number of people living in "food deserts" (IE no local grocery store that has a fresh food selection), you end up with a mass market for restaurants from people who want fresh food/high end meals beyond fast food. And for a lot of socialist types, especially those working well paying jobs or have access to their parents credit cards, there exists a culture of people who NEVER make their own meals or have a home cooked meal and pretty much eat EVERY meal at a restaurant. To the point that you have shit like in American Psycho, where getting a reservation at Restaurant X can make or break you socially.
