Putin is actually in a far more precarious position than a lot of Western observers seem to think. He's barely keeping it together at home, and he's surrounded by enemies abroad. With no one to credibly replace him, things in Russia could go from bad to worse very quickly.

As for Russia? If Poland had actually sent regular troops to Ukraine to fight alongside Ukrainian troops like they had threatened, the Russians wouldn't have been able to stop them. They don't have the technology or the manpower to be a formidable power. They had some real successes in Syria, but struggled with logistics -- and that was a relatively small expedition.

A Polish-Baltic ground force would absolutely obliterate Russia. Their army is still an unprofessional mess for the most part and their truly professional forces -- their submarine task forces -- still fuck up magnitudes greater than western powers.

Russia's biggest problem is China. Russian far west looks like fucking china. There are more newspapers in Chinese than Russian. China has long term lease on Siberian timber and land many times of Crimean peninsula. They are clearcutting forest, draining lake Baikal etc. Also China considers Russian far East as their historically Chinese territories, they teach that in Chinese schools. Russian women in Eastern Russia prefer Chinese because local unemployment is brutal, Chinese bring in money and tend to be less of drunks than their Russian husbands. There are some sad tube vids on Russian comrades tolerating cuckuldry.

In the West of Russia, there are no enemies plotting invasion, pretty much everyone wants to get the fuck away from Russia and everything Russian. The only reason Balts joined NATO is keep comrades at bay and constantly whine about Russia meddling with their shit.

Every single Russian oligarch, every single bureaucrat has a "spare landing strip" in form of foreign citizenship and real estate. Every single Russian "patriot" who professes love to motherland has his family in Switzerland, France, UK (London = Moscow West) and US. The whole notion that Russia is going to lob nukes into West is laughable.

Historically, it's always been like that. Top 1% that controlled everything, may be 4% middle class and 95% of dumb peasants who can't read. Now, with that information please use this map to compare that with Africa.

What I'm saying is that the birthrates say that China's population will go down while Africa's goes up. In addition to that there are a lot of African countries that have great GDP growth. Meanwhile, the economy in China is slowing down, their population is shrinking, and they have all sorts of internal problems.

Climbing the tech tree is useful, but it's not the be all end all. What a country needs to become a regional or global player is economic power. Look at Saudi Arabia. They were nobodies until they struck oil. They then capitalized on that oil and made themselves rich. They used that money to become a regional power and build up their own infrastructure. Now they are second most scientifically advanced country in their region. Also having a growing population helps a country be more productive and gain more wealth.
