Trump causes confusion with NASA tweet - The Moon is a part of Mars, apparently

Various publications have put their own editorial spin on this:

"Trump attacks Nasa and claims the moon is 'a part' of Mars" (The Guardian):
Followers of astronomy were in for a surprise on Friday, when Donald Trumpannounced that the moon is part of Mars.

In a tweet, apparently commenting on his own administration’s space policy, the president said: “For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon - We did that 50 years ago.”

He added: “They should be focused on the much bigger things we are doing, including Mars (of which the Moon is a part), Defense and Science!”

Trump’s declaration shocked many space enthusiasts, because the moon has not traditionally been regarded as part of Mars.

The leading theory is that a collision between Earth and a planet-sized entity, many years ago, resulted in debris that eventually became the moon. On average Mars is 140m miles from the moon. Nasa did not immediately respond to a question from the Guardian asking if the moon is part of Mars.

Irrespective of whether the moon is part of Mars (it isn’t), Trump’s announcement was doubly surprising given his previous enthusiasm for a moon trip. His criticism of Nasa for “talking about going to the moon” came just three weeks after Trump championed the idea of a lunar visit.

On 13 May Trump said in a tweet: “We are going back to the moon,” while in March Nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine, who was appointed by Trump, announced plans to send US astronauts to the moon by 2024. In October Mike Pence, the vice-president, said: “Our determination is to see Americans back on the moon in the very near future.”

There is a possibility Trump’s tweet was a comment on Nasa’s broader planto eventually travel to Mars from the moon, but either way it soon emerged that Trump’s moon reversal may have been provoked by the Fox Business TV channel. One hour before the president offered his take on the moon’s origin and his criticism of Nasa, Fox guest Neil Cavuto had expressed scepticism over a moon trip.

Cavuto reportedly told the TV cable network that Nasa is “refocusing on the moon, the next sort of quest, if you will, but didn’t we do this moon thing quite a few decades ago?”

The White House did not immediately respond to a Guardian question about whether Trump’s statement should be considered official guidance. In ancient times the moon was worshipped as a god, while more recently some children’s stories have speculated that it is made of cheese.

I think he was trying to say that a moonbase is a prerequisite for going to Mars. Regardless this is going to help quite a few people feel superior to Blonard Blompf for a bit and help them temporarily escape the negative feelings of living under Cheeto Hitler. He truly is a kind and caring individual.

That whole tweet should be a random.txt.

Mars is not part of the Moon, maybe he should look at an elementary solar system first.

EDIT: Although that tweet is poorly written, Mars has two moons of its own: Phobos and Deimos. However, very different from our moon. My original point still stands.

That's exactly what he was saying, and if AOC said the same words these rags would be defending her and saying anyone making fun of her was hurtful to women in STEM.

I never understood people misinterpreting quotes to make themselves feel smart. Doesn't that actually make you stupid?

My favourite is Rumsfield's "known knowns" and "unknown unknowns" which was heavily mocked at the time but has morphed into common usage since everybody but the media actually understood what he meant.

I came here genuinely looking forward to the President saying some dumb shit that would make me laugh.

Instead I'm just reminded that the IFLS crowd just likes pretty paintings of stars

EDIT: Also yes we "did this moon thing" decades ago, but we haven't since. Bringing men to the Moon isn't easy nor has a long term colony on another celestial body been done before. We're not just going to shoot up astronauts to Mars without having practiced and collected information from a "dry run" on the Moon to make sure they have the most successful mission possible. This is like saying "I ran once, like a couple decades ago, and have not since, but I should really be focusing on running a marathon tomorrow."
I get the impression some NASA admin asked if he can cancel Mars missions and put everything towards only going to the Moon. Trump is venting because he wants to be the president that started the mission that got us to Mars.

This is stupid. Why does this have to be news.
Do I really need to explain to you how this fucking terrifying? Look, this orange maniac already has his fat childish fingers on the nuclear codes. The fact that this white supremacist also wants to colonize Mars is just him continuing to build his empire of failure (remember Atlantic City?). I can't believe that he could possibly get away with this, this is fucking terrifying and I'm scared shitless that my 7 adopted children from Africa and Central America, whom brighten my life with every one of their diverse smiles, have to grow up in a world where the first person to send people to the Red Planet is a fucking white supremacist. It makes me fucking sick to my stomach. Him putting the moon in there is just showing how fucking ignorant he is, he probably only mentioned it because it's the only other planet he knows about, the fucking idiot. God, I'm gritting my teeth right now in such fucking anger, my black Turkish husband has been worried about America's Fuhrer expanding is orange cheeto empire even further. I can't sleep at night anymore, if he puts a base on the moon, he'll essentially be a Bond villain - not to mention that he's best friends with Putin. I wouldn't be surprised if Putin is also putting him up to this, we all know how their relationship works, Putin says "jump," and Trump says "Yes, master!!" I have a trash can next to me right now because I'm physically ill thinking about this. Oh god. One of my 8 African children are crying now because he's so worried about me. Sorry guys, gotta go, I don't know if I'm going to be okay....

HURR ORANGO MAN BAD
HE THINK MOON AM MARS
HAHAHA
NOW GO DRINK SOY LATTE AND WATCH CAT VIDEO.
HURRRRRRRRRR
JAMAL PLZ FUCK ME WIFE.

Right Twitter at the current moment:
The Moon is a part of Mars, because NASA is hyperprojecting an image of outer space. The world is flat because this non accredited source launched a balloon that was not edited and it was SHOT DOWN BY THE US GOVERNMENT.

Centrist Twitter at the current moment:
Boy howdy those Leftists and Righters are fucking stupid, *proceeds to guzzle semen and farts*

This is why I love Donald Trump; all he has to do is say one thing, and everyone spergs out.

It's great to give Trump a teasing about a poorly worded Tweet, but the autistic TDS crowd will actually believe that damn dirty Drumpf literally doesn't know what the moon is.
