U.N. Expert: Air Pollution Kills Somebody Every 5 Seconds
Colman Andrews

Air pollution stings our eyes, burns our lungs, and turns our skies murky brown or yellow. It is also responsible for the early deaths of some 7 million people every year -- almost one every five seconds, according to David Boyd, an independent expert on human rights and the environment for the United Nations. Access to clean air isn’t just a nicety, he says; it’s a human right.

In advance of World Environment Day on Wednesday -- its theme this year is air pollution -- Boyd issued a statement identifying an uncontaminated atmosphere as a core component of a healthy environment, and noted that “the right to a healthy environment is fundamental to human well-being.” The failure of governments globally to ensure clean air, said Boyd, is a “violation of the rights to life, health, and well-being, as well as the right to live in a healthy environment.”

Boyd repeated the advice he offered in a report presented to the U.N. Human Rights Council in March on ways to reduce air pollution: Countries should monitor air quality and its impacts on human health; assess sources of air pollution; establish air quality legislation; and develop air quality action plans.

“In celebration of World Environment Day,” Boyd said, “I urge states to take bold action to beat air pollution, improve health, address climate change, and fulfill their human rights obligations.”

Bad air quality isn’t solely an urban concern, an issue only in the world’s most polluted cities: An estimated 90% of the world’s population is estimated to breathe polluted air. One specific type of air pollution, commonly known as PM2.5 -- shorthand for particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller -- is especially harmful. The source of PM2.5 is typically combustion — fires, automobiles, or factories — and this type of air pollution has been linked to a number of health issues, including asthma, lung infections, heart attacks, and premature death. In the United States, these are the states with the most premature death.

More than half of the population is affected even in countries with a reputation for clean air. For example, 56.9% of people in Denmark are exposed to air pollution, and Denmark is considered to be among the countries doing the most to protect the environment.

So according to this U.N "Expert," one person dies every five second to air pollution. Lets do the math here. One person dies every five seconds. That means that at least 12 people die per minute. 720 people die per hour. 17,280 people die a day. And 6,324,480 people are killed every year. And according to U.N "Expert" David Boyd, "some 7 million people die each year."

I did the math, and that's not "some 7 million people." 7 million is 7 million, not 6.3 million. David "Expert" Boyd should have said "some 6 million people die a year," not 7 million. And according to this https://www.ecology.com/birth-death-rates/ website.

World Birth and Death Rates
Estimated 2011
Birth RateDeath Rate
• 19 births/1,000 population• 8 deaths/1,000 population
• 131.4 million births per year• 55.3 million people die each year
• 360,000 births per day• 151,600 people die each day
• 15,000 births each hour• 6,316 people die each hour
• 250 births each minute• 105 people die each minute
• Four births each second of every day• Nearly two people die each second
Average life expectancy at birth is approximately 67 years. Sources: Population Reference Bureau & The World Factbook (Central Intelligence Agency)

It states that an average 55.3 million people die each year. And against an average 131.4 million people we gain 76.1 million people a year. Which means that the world population increases. Is it sad that 6.3 million people die each year from air pollution? Yes. But the question that I am wondering is, What age group is affected the most by air pollution? Because the way I see it, if majority of deaths of air pollution are the elderly. Which those who are elderly is anyone 65 years old and older. https://www.who.int/healthinfo/survey/ageingdefnolder/en/

And according to the chart above the average life expectancy at birth is 67 years. Which is a huge increase from 100 years ago. As according to this chart. https://www.seniorliving.org/history/1900-2000-changes-life-expectancy-united-states/

As you can see the average life expectancy has increased tremendously since 100 years ago. Which has had a whopping 62% increase. And that is due to modern medicine, science, and the fact that we are, and I repeat are, using more cleaner energy fuels than 100 years ago.

So, is pollution killing people? Yes, but just as it had when we started to use fire. The only way to combat this so called "problem," is to use cleaner energy sources, such as Nuclear energy, allow medicine to be accessible to treat and cure diseases, allow medicine to be developed and created to further increase our ability to cure diseases, and don't overhype the problem to scare people into doing something dumb and stupid shit. Like the New Green Deal.

I could rewrite this article line by line to be about how industrial pollution retarding overpopulation is a Good Thing.

And I wouldn't even have to incur student debt to learn how to do it. Fuck, journalists are useless.

Quick, let's throw away our entire economy and way of life to save the earth. I'm sure China and Russia won't swoop in while we're fucking around in teepees asking the Native Americans about spirits and shit.

Let the chinks and Apu Nahasapeemapetilons of the world kill themselves. At +1.3B people per country, a little environmental population control isn't a terrible thing.
I was thinking the same thing. We don't know just how many people disappear in places like bugland and poo-in-the-loo-Jersey, as well as other crap holes. To say that many people are dying of pollution- I could believe it in those areas though.

I'm down to minimize pollution and most civilized countries have made great strides...

Some countries don't give a fuck and I'm not going to change my life for them.

Hmmmm....

OK, air pollution is a real thing that causes real health problems. The particular air pollution they're talking about is that containing particulate matter 2.5 micrometers in size.

I'll note at this point that CO2 is neither an air pollutant nor does it contain particulate matter. So why then does this dude complaining about a legitimate problem then tack on "Climate change"? They just really want to keep the public's understanding muddy so they can look like they've been consistent about this.

Stuff like this indicates to me the left realizes it wildly overstated climate change, but they gloated so smugly about it they can't just admit they were wrong. So they slowly back off it, substituting similar but distinctly different concepts. Eventually "climate change" will mean "pollution" and they'll insist again they were right the whole time.

Nuclear power

I am one of those nuclear power spergs. If mankind got off the "but muh nuclear waste!" and "muh Chernobyl!" we wouldn't have to worry about carbon emissions.

Seriously, even the big power plant accidents (which are, y'know, uber mega rare) could have been massively reduced in scale with a few more safety measures. Like the British one which caught fire, but had little effect on the surroundings because of the radiation scrubbers they'd had installed.

Doesn't make radiation less terrifying, mind you.

We must put India and China to the sword; It is the eco-friendly(tm) thing to do!

The pajeets don't pollute that much relatively speaking.

See, here you go confusing things again. This is about air pollution, specifically the type with 2.5 micrometer particulate matter. Your post is about Co2, which is not air pollution and contains no particulate matter. These are two completely different things.

Also, pollution per capita being low doesn't matter if you have shitloads of people. It's the amount in the air that matters, not how many people put it there.

lmao how much did BP pay you to write this angry post about how much you love pollution
Who is this addressed to? I have been passionately arguing against climate change nonsense for a long time and have yet to receive a check! YO BP, pay up assholes!

So what's your solution to pollution that doesn't involve cucking ourselves, while India and China keep doing their thing?
I never understood this argument. Why does the US leading in taking steps to fight climate change make us cucks? Why does what China and India do matter at all to our own policy? Should we not bother having free speech because China doesn't either? If we start getting our act together China and Russia are gonna do what? Invade? Nuke us? Make fun of us on state television?
