"Current year" terms that piss you off

Maybe I'm old, but when we used it back in the day we used it to describe bad abnormal shit and an insult.

Calling me weird for liking something that's palpable and not spergy but you've never seen before gets me to cringe. Hard.

I'm surprised I haven't gone this far without having a convention end in a bloodbath with how many nerds and geeks use it. Both online and offline.

Nice job on expanding the populace lexicon and shaping how people think there, public education.

I use 'Weird' the way HPL did.
 
A Current Year term I like is baizuo (白左) -- "white left" -- from China. Even people on the other side of Earth can see that white-hating SJWs are generally white themselves. I believe the "white" in "white left" also implies emptiness.

Not necessarily a "term" but similarly I hate the notion that the only a way a female character can be "strong" is if she isn't in any way feminine.

She can't like pink, can't be a mother or want children, can't be motherly in any way (unless it's to a grown adult), can't want to get married, etc. Basically in order to be a strong woman you can't be anything remotely woman.

There's a character in an older anime I like that's a female dog. While pregnant, she swam across an ocean to alert their allies about a threatening situation. She wasn't there for the "final battle" because she was in labor, but before and after that she was present with the pack in some way. To me, this qualifies her as a badass and a steel magnolia, but apparently she isn't feminist enough because she was "just pumped fill of puppies".
 
I think "empower" was mentioned earlier. I recently saw this Target ad claiming this digital tracking and communication device "empowers kids to play." Maybe I sound old here, but before Current Year, American kids just went out to play without a phone or tracking device on them at all times.

Current Year America really is like a cyberpunk dystopia.

Sad really. I'd rather kids did what they wanted as long as they were home by dinner.

This word just pisses me off so much, it also doesn't help much that my manchild of a brother is frequently using it because he tries to sound "hip and cool" around all his stoner friends who absolutely hate him.
 
When people describe movies or music as being "old" after they've been out for around two months, which corresponds with my annoyance of people who can only consume new media and think anything that isn't brand new is worthless.

Also, people who talk about getting new shoes then going back to the shoe store in a week and switching out those shoes for a brand new kind of the exact same pair (not an "exchange" but literal stealing)
 
"People of color" weirds me out. It divides the world into "white" and "not white," which seems like such a dehumanizing way to define yourself: it's not that you're Jamaican or Puerto Rican or Thai or Inuit or friggin' Martian, it's that you're not white. It commits that most Current Year of sins--erasure.

Speaking of which, "erasure." You run head-first into this all the time in discussions of history. It's not erasure to focus on certain groups or figures in a given historical period; those are often the only ones we have definitive data for! We can theorize about how transgender lesbian WoC lived under the reign of Psamtik I, but we can't know, because a vanishingly rare subculture in ancient times definitely wouldn't have been recorded if they existed within the mass of the faceless illiterate peasantry.

"Becky" and "Karen" for white women who dare to not agree with you. Not exactly insulting, but tiresome to see over and over again.
