Culture Buzzfeed fails to prevent employees from unionising

Breaking media news from the Central Arbitration Committee: Buzzfeed has failed in its bid to prevent its employees from forming a union chapel. Buzzfeed management hired pricey lawyers from Matrix Chambers to essentially argue that they had laid off so many staff that the number supporting collective bargaining had fallen below the 50% threshold. Buzzfeed staff reading today’s judgement will be left wondering if bosses fired pro-unionisation employees to prevent them from forming a chapel…

The Employer stated that the restructuring process was completed today and as of the close of business a total of 22 people within the company had left BuzzFeed. The Employer believed that a number of those who left the business after requesting voluntary redundancy, were members of the Union. The Employer further stating that “this fundamental change to the proposed bargaining unit may have a significant impact on the density of union members and support within the proposed bargaining unit for recognition.”

Two Buzzfeed journalists – Kelly Oakes and Francis Whittaker – gave evidence on behalf of the union. Both were then let go…

The committee came to a decision today that the threshold favouring recognition had been met and so the application for collective bargaining to be recognised should proceed. Buzzfeed spent big bucks trying to stop this from happening, and failed…

If they didn't have contracts, they can be fired for pretty much anything. Plus, even if forming a union is protected, how do you prove they were fired because of that?

Unless you have both significant buy in, and (this is really the important part) a skill that is not easy to replace, unions are completely useless and on top of it they're a net drain, as you've got a bunch of bureaucracy doing no real work.

Unions are a labor monopoly. That is all you need to know when wondering if a particular union will work, are they an effective monopoly? Some clickbait writers in a random buzzfeed office are not an effective monopoly.

We're already in that universe. Buzzfeed is financially failing, hence layoffs, hence their "journalists" trying to unionize and demand better severance despite having zero leverage, hence the work environment is toxic and work quality declines, hence Buzzfeed continues to fail, hence more layoffs, etc.
 
These companies hired all these woke commies to churn out clickbait leftist propaganda. I hope they choke on the giant dick they fluffed out.

I believe a chapel may be another name for a union local or a division of it. One of my workplace's clients is a small union. When they give us their ledgers each year so we can prepare their tax return and other reports, some of the preprinted ledger sheets have a column for "Chapel Dues".

As for the article, part of me is surprised that Buzzfeed "writers" would want to unionize given how cushy those writing gigs must be to produce such mindless drivel for pay. On the other hand, the mass layoffs probably have all the remaining writers panicking to the point they want to unionize just for the lucrative benefits and protections a union provides.

Still, it's hard to consider Buzzfeed a legitimate media outlet when it seems like they let anyone publish whatever they want - even if its relevant or useful to nobody else but the authors themselves.
