MEXICO CITY — The governor of Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca is condemning the slaying of a local mayor shortly after he took office.

Gov. Alejandro Murat confirmed the killing of Tlaxiaco Mayor Alejandro Aparicio Santiago via his Twitter account Tuesday. He promised a thorough investigation and said a suspect was already in custody.

The state prosecutor's office said in a statement that Aparicio had just been sworn in and was headed to a meeting at city hall when an unknown number of gunmen opened fire at him. He was taken to a hospital, but died there later.

Four other people were wounded in the attack.

Tlaxiaco is the hometown of Yalitza Aparicio, star of the film "Roma." It was not immediately known if she was related to the victim.

If you weren’t aware, 133 politicans (48 of them actual candidates, the rest were party members or staff) were murdered during campaign season. Cartels are actively murdering anyone who wants to change the status quo. They’re actual terrorists.

The sad thing is that cartels have diversified into other illegal (such as human and weapons trafficking) and legal (such as avacado farming and mining) trades so even legalizing all drugs wouldn’t put them down.

It's a testament to how much their donors rely on illegal labor and the current status quo that that wing of the party has been sperging about Iran and Syria instead of Mexico.

At some point in 2018, there was a magazine article (in Time, perhaps?) about the Mexican drug cartels with a map of the cartels and the territory they controlled. Assuming the map was accurate, the entire country is under the control of cartels.

The article also mentioned the rampant corruption that allows the cartels to control the police and others in authority, largely via bribes that supplement their meager income. So, it's no surprise the cartels would strike out against anyone in authority that makes a well-intended declaration to stand up to the them, their corrupt ways, and the lucrative gravy train associated with that.

Seriously though the situation with the cartels was already way out of hand 4..5 years ago and they're getting even ballsy-er by the day. I wouldn't be surprised if this leads to a Mexican civil war in a few years.

Who will be able to successfully stand up to the cartels when they can strike down anyone that dares speak out against them, let alone actively resist them? These are the same groups that have been rumored to abduct and kill some of the migrants trying to seek refugee status in the US for no other reason than that they can.

Money laundering doesn't surprise me. There are crime kingpins that do this so they can argue that they're doing some sort of "community good" if and when they're arrested and tried for their criminal activity. It's easy to condemn a criminal with no redeeming traits. However, one who employs people in legitimate jobs and contributes to the community in some noticeable, positive way can generate enough sympathy from those clueless or willing to overlook their shady doings.
