Culture YouTube releases it's YouTube Rewind for 2018

  • Iniciador del tema Iniciador del tema Null
  • Fecha de inicio Fecha de inicio
Usually these things are masturbatory self-indulgences for the YT community featuring a lot of e-celebs. They start off with PewDiePie declaring "YEAR REWIND" and then showing some dumb shit for the fans.

This one
  • Starts with Will Smith (who isn't a YouTuber).
  • Has Ninja (who isn't a YouTuber).
  • A Fortnite gag.
  • No PDP because he said the word NIGGER.
  • A bunch of people no one cares about.
  • An entire two minute long scene celebrating diversity, women, and non-whites.
  • Locked chat with the people in the video watching it together and live commenting with the most cringe inducing shit I've ever fucking seen.
Currently it's at about 70% dislikes and sinking. The comments are tearing it to shit. For all the talk of diversity, one commenter from Brasil pointed out that there are no Brazilian YouTubers present. Sorry menino, you faggots don't wear hijabs and don't hate Trump enough. Better luck in 2019.

YouTube Rewind 2018 but every time an irrelevant YouTuber appears JaidenAnimations hentai pops up on screen for a millisecond

The whole thing was a YouTube commercial for advertisers, not an honest appraisal or celebration of content. It was by YouTube, for potential YouTube investors, and no one else. It was YT trying to pitch themselves as woke, diverse, friendly, concerned about the "right" things and hey, who wouldn't WANT to get a piece of that market? Right? Sign up here today and you'll be rolling in the right side of history before you know it!

No different really than one of those sleek video presentations where a company tries to lure in investors by sweeping the losses of last fiscal year under the rug by highlighting the single division that made a few bucks and hyping it as the "diverse and visionary way of the future!" while those asking about how the companies other 48 product lines are doing are told "we prefer not to dwell in the past, this is a forward-facing company in a vastly changed industry whose realities are far different than only a few years ago!" (i.e. - we lost the farm, we NEED cash fast or we're bankrupt)
I couldn't put it better. Since YouTube has been trying to be a brand it has been putting front and center the types that can be marketable, this year all the famous ones fucked up one way or the other. The Pauls are a PR nightmare, the Tea Spill Saga, the BetterHelp scandal. On defense of the greedy asses of Google there wasn't anyone available that was actually good, and those who were won't play the rules.
PewDiePie seems to be bigger than anything you throw at him, Shane Dawson exposed Jake Paul after Nerd City was done with the hard work, H3H3 became the punching bag of the commentary community; DeFranco, Jacksfilms, Boogie and others were out of the question even before the shitfest. Everyone who gets even near the wrong politics gets the rope too.
As it has been stated before, YouTube, as the entire internet, is not a community but rather a combination of niches. From a business standpoint people as basic as Kozhy or Singh are the safe investment, in paper the best bet, but in the great scheme they worth less than an australian dude puking while wearing a bodysuit. YouTube wants to be like television, that's why they always bring celebs and late shows, they want outsiders to believe that is the same when the only similarities are found on Adult Swim.

Isn't the point of a YouTube Rewind supposed to be a reflection of the past events of the current year on YouTube?
No, of course not, what am I even saying? It's all just a bunch of fluff and bullshit every year. That's the actual point.

The biggest problem with the Rewind is how it treats YouTube like a singular community, when even it's really a bunch of disparate communities only loosely linked together.
It's like trying to argue all car drivers are exactly the same. Youtube is just a medium, it's not a lifestyle. Woke businesses like to do this enforced top-down cult of personality shit because they think their users are just simple cogs that need to be tweaked and oiled just a bit to get them all spinning the same way.

Channels with actual creativity like Red Letter Media should be part of this kind of things.

Wait, scratch that. Videos like the YouTube rewind are for talentless hack frauds. Real hack frauds, if you get my drift.

No Ugandan Knuckles. I'll pass. *sigh*
and no steamed hams either :(

As for what others are saying about the purpose of it, Im guessing its just the most corporate puff piece imaginable to screen for boomer executives who know less than the average late 90s rwandan about the internet and internet culture in order to justify more shekels invested or whatever

Who'd have thought youtube could release something so shitty it would make people look back to what was previously considered the shittiest thing ever on it and say "You know what? This is so much worse than justin beiber I can't allow myself to rate both videos the same."

It's so bad it made literally everything that wasn't it objectively better, by establishing that the floor for quality actually had a sub-basement.

I don't think anyone is really blaming the youtubers in question for taking an opportunity that was given to them for free. I think people are actually being remarkably mature about that part.
