UN EU planning a 10,000-strong armed force to protect border - Experts claim "a bit too late for that now"

The European Union will deploy 10,000 armed border guards to tackle unlawful migration by 2020, the European Commission President Claude Juncker is expected to announce in a speech on Wednesday.

The force will have the power to use armed force on the E.U.’s external borders, according to a draft of the document seen by the Financial Times.

Migration has been a particularly divisive issue within the E.U. since a major influx of refugees in 2015. Voters’ fears and concerns over migration have, in part, led to right wing parties surging in popularity and being elected to government in a number of member states including Italy and Austria.

The border force proposal marks a significant E.U.-level policy move in a debate that has long been defined by disagreements between individual member states. Most recently, in July, the new anti-immigrant Italian government refused to allow boats carrying hundreds of migrants to dock in its ports, leading to a political deadlock that only defused when Spain agreed to take the migrants in.

The proposal for a heavily beefed-up E.U. border force is also likely to be highly controversial—with rights groups who decry the construction of a “Fortress Europe,” and with political parties who resent centralized European institutions accruing more power.

What nations are gonna be offering up their soldiers for this? Will each nation be compelled to offer men or will it be entirely voluntary? Will they be soldiers at all, or some kind of mercenary army? How will they solve the problem of all these forces speaking different languages? How will command work? Will some EU bureaucrat that lives on a different planet from the people he presumes to govern have the final word, or will they give it to a soldier?

This sounds like a good idea, until you remember who came up with it and who, ultimately, will be responsible for seeing it through.

if they do it through an expansion of Frontex, it shouldn't be that bad. A lot of the logistical and organizational stuff is already in place if they opt to do it that way.

We all know that will never happen as it was initially formed for (i.e guarding the coast like Frontex already fails to do since international laws stop them from doing anything). I wouldn't be surprised to learn they'll do taxi service yet again, like the NGOs already do at sea. Except this taxi will also include a ticket home.

Spain, Italy and Greece suffer from high unemployment and they are the places that immigrants enter illegally, so I was wondering for quite some time why the EU doesn't just shell out some money to hire people from these nations to work as border guards, it would kill two birds with one stone.

Between their coastline and their land borders, you're looking at protecting a total perimeter about 3 times the size of the Australian coastline. Good luck with that.

To be honest I just see this as a ploy from the EU to get more funding from its member states in response to Britain pulling out. This armed force will likely be poorly managed and very ineffective.
