If there's one character Tumblr can't fuck up, it's probably Tooru Hagakure.
I mean, look at her.

That's what's really funny to me. Canon characters that are CLEARLY Japanese are drawn 3 shades darker than the norm despite the fact the creators confirm in-canon and outside of it that they are. However, a character in which you can completely imagine them however your want (after all if a bird person can exist in this world and go to a Japanese high school than so can other weirdly drawn characters) is ignored. If anything it makes more sense to take advantage of the opportunity. But nah. Gotta fill that quota!

I won't sperg too much about it but from what I know there's this weird area for really light people who aren't white. Many people who look more "stereotypical" tend to marginalize people who aren't as stereotypical as them regarding looks. You also have the notion that because you aren't "fully white" that there's always this stigma around you about it. It really sucks on both ends and I feel kinda bad for people in the wierd-ass middle ground.

I think it comes from people believing that white=bad while dark=good. A reverse on the Dark=bad and white=good. I don't mind this change, but it's mostly the problem with this art. The overcompensation. So instead of saying, "dark skin characters can look just as beautiful as any other character" it's become, "fuck whitey, we rule". Japanese people fall into this weird gray area because they are light, but even when they're darker, they aren't that dark.

Therefore, when applying Dark=good, it just doesn't work and breaks the narrative. So to compensate for that what do you do? You draw the Japanese characters darker than they are so you can create your narrative. Forget looking at a ref of an actual Japanese person. Just make you own version of a Japanese person!

No wonder so many of these people a racist caricatures. That's the only thing they can be in these people's eyes...and that's kind of depressing.

I guess the tumblrina who drew this wanted to do her with hairy legs and arms. Didn't the american natives not have body hair distributed like that? Iirc that's an european trait. Also that thousand yard stare...

I enjoy that the canon non-white characters aren't touched racial wise but the canon European white Princesses are racebent. Yup.

A lot of natives still are mostly hairless, which likely means she's never actually met one irl. Color me surprised.

Also, why do they always draw leg hair growing across legs and thighs horizontally? It's like they don't even know the direction of human hair growth.

Wait...they're selling this? This is so unprofessional. I can already tell from the artwork that it is so rushed. The shading is so messy. There are parts where there should be shading but it's not there. And the lineart is so haphazardly put together. Especially with the hair. It doesn't look like hair. It looks like two rolls with lines in it. The lines for the shirt aren't even! What the hell?!

I understand that you want to make artwork. That is fine. But when you are putting out a product it should be your best work. Who is going to buy this? Where is the appeal? I can tell this is so rushed it's not even funny. If you want to sell artwork, sell artwork that is your best. If you can't make artwork that isn't messy don't ask for money for it. It's that simple.
