The only difference I could find is that Chris is at least an enjoyable kind of hateable. And of course Dobson fucks up the design and pose of Kubo. I'll never wrap my head around Andy's thought process of giving a kid 40-something facial wrinkles and a broken wrist. Kinda bummed Pleb didn't just do a full redraw beyond those two trouble spots. Mainly because all of Dobson's art are trouble spots

Surprising that Dobbo even went abroad in the first place. Lolcows aren't really known for traveling, with the notable exception of ADF.

Like every terrible artist, Dobson thinks good art is detailed art and that detailed art is synonymous with "drawing many lines".
That's why he floods everything with a shitton of lines, but it just doesn't work... so he draws even more lines.
It doesn't even matter if it's lines in a face or wrinkles in cloth.
What he doesn't understand is that a skilled artist can achieve great effects with only a couple of lines.
It's just the same as with anatomy. Sure, you can draw super stylized cartoony bodies without knowing how anatomy works, but the better your grasp on real anatomy is, the better you can stylize and abstract stuff down.
A good artist can draw with 3 lines what Dobson would draw with 30 lines... and the image by the good artist would still be more detailed.
That was kind of the point, to show that it only takes a few minor tweaks to make his art go from terrible to servicable.
Usually, you just need to remove the lines under the eyes to make the characters look 75% less neurotic.
That Kubo image is great since it showcases many of Dobson's flaws as an artist. One of which is his inability to stylize stuff like the character's hair. Look at how horrible it looks in his original. I don't even know the character and I can tell that Dobson fucked up.

Why the fuck do all of his characters even the children have so many fucking age lines that makes them look 70? It's even weirder when you consider his style is heavily anime influenced which tends to idolize youthful looking characters.

To be fair, Kubo does have a kind of fucked up hair and indeed has a "line" below his eye
IMO Dobsons version looks more like source Kubo, while Pleb's looks more aesthetically pleasing.
The thing is 1- Dobson only managed to get close to source Kubo because he happens to be a character that is not traditionally handsome, 2- while the character's hair isn't as well groomed as Pleb's version, Dobson just dropped the ball, that hair just screams incompetence, goddammit Dobson, and to finish: 3- Dobson's version is so fucking stiff and has so many errors on the structure that it ends up looking really jarring.
So, bussiness as usual with this fucker, I guess.

Laika's animation is insanely detailed, so maybe Dobson made his drawing overtly-detailed as a result. I don't think he did a terrible job, especially compared to the fanart he's done for other works, but the pose and hair irks me. Still, it could have turned out much worse.

I feel as if Dobson has the hidden talent of bringing the worse* out of every design he draws, if a character has some cute design quirk (Kubo's expressiveness and "messy" design), dobson downplays it and makes it ugly, if a character has some "ugly" trait (Kubo's eyebag and thinness) you can be sure as fuck that, for some reason, Dobson is going to make them so jarring that the end result is going to be really bad.
It's almost as if he doesn't know shit behind design choices and why they work and when they won't work.
It specially irks me in this case because I love the character design of this movie.
