Here is the thing, as I see it. Chris thinks that he is a good person. If he acts according to an "honest impulse", he can't have done anything that bad, can he? The instincts of a good person are, if not good, at least must be completely understandable. If people only understood some shit about trolls and X-Boxes, they would have to sympathize with Chris. If they didn't, that would pretty much be taking the trolls' side, which makes them a bad person. And if you are a good person, who is in a feud with a bad person, you should be able to go to other good people for support. That is what Chris is doing with that message.
Chris doesn't do nuance. He is good, so the things he does are good. People who for whatever reason are on the opposite side of some disagreement with him are bad people. To him this is so obvious that he assumes that the vast majority people will see it too, as soon as he gives a couple words of explanation.
