A lot of people seem to think Japan is a lot more reactionary than it really is. Last year, the education ministry announced a policy for "promoting proper understanding of teachers on … sexual orientation/gender identity as well as making sure to inform on the school's necessary measures regarding this matter.". And they're currently ruled by the LDP, their conservative party, so this isn't even considered left wing. While they make creepy cartoons, possession of actual child abuse images is illegal, unlike in certain other countries, like Russia. It's weird no one accuses Russians of all being depraved paedophiles, but I guess that's too much for people who define their entire world views around cartoons and video games.

The main cause of this, I think, is that very reactionary countries would probably censor anything too provocative, so even those games and media they do produce (Mount and Blade in Turkey and War Thunder in Russia, for example) aren't considered insensitive to PC types. Japan is in the position of being slightly more socially conservative than PC Americans, but not so much more that cartoon titty video games would be banned. I do find the idea of Spoony in Sudan amusing, though. The age of consent is 10, but sodomy is a capital offence.

I swear Spoony's understanding of Japanese culture comes from PC and SJW culture, hell his understanding of Asians in general. Like fuck, he and his fans think that the age of consent in Japan is under 16 when it's not, there's one island that has no one on it that's still fourteen, rest of the country is not. Age of consent there is 16 and up, some places I believe it's even 18 (each area has it's own laws to get rid of the old age of consent before the government made it's own if I recall) and the whole younger person dating an older person there is a pretty old story trope. Spoony couldn't even be bothered to look into the ages of the characters before making his tirade either. Japanese do love their birthdays and blood types on their characters after all.

This is an interesting revelation because I think he's referring to Brad. His personal drama erupted and Shot on Shitteo fell apart just months after Noah hit his movie goal, so it's possible that Brad didn't have the energy to help him anymore and Noah didn't have the confidence to carry on himself, so he abandoned it.

Ironically, people here and elsewhere suggested that Noah seek Brad's help when it was becoming clear the movie wouldn't happen.

Western progressives who comment on Japan are usually clueless on Japan. While Japan tend towards social conservatism (which is a good thing imo), they've started taking measures to address their social problems like homelessness, high incidents of suicide, and sexual harassment.

I really feel sorry for those people who are still backing Spoony financially in hopes that he'll somehow return to his former self. That guys isn't coming back.

I think Resident Evil 7 is used as an example of modern Japanese censorship, as it's one of the best test-cases given its content as to what they remove or do not. It was pretty badly butchered - it was released in a heavily-censored version and a "Grotesque version", the latter of which is still rather censored. The latter version removes a lot of dismemberment, not just in-action, but after-fact (such as removing a head on display), and also some of the blood colour related to dismemberment (red to black).

I think the biggest reason for the removals is that the Japanese ratings board can give an adults only rating purely for violent content, vs. western ones that tend to be more lean on violence and give AO ratings for sexual content. A lot of censorship in developed nations isn't necessarily because there is no way to publish the material, but because it's not commercially viable to push through certain features if they limit the marketability. I agree that if it was purely Japanese-designed, it may pre-emptively not have planned those scenes in the first place.

That's reductive. Internet fame is more than YT metrics. Spoony was influential enough to receive invites to conventions across North America and Europe and got nearly $6,000~/mo for the mere promise of content. Very few if any other YT channels with 100k~ subs get that level of support and opportunity. Discussion of his downfall is amazingly widespread. Fredrik Knudsen's video on him has over half a million views and thousands of comments from people who knew about him. BETRAYAL, the Ultima Retrospective and some of his Final Fantasy reviews were also well known disproportionate to his sub count.

Spoony also hosted his content on Blip for many years and started in the early days when the market was much smaller, which distorts his apparent popularity.

Noah is a minor internet celebrity, but he has what I'd call residual fame.

I wouldn't know what to do if I were Miles in a situation like that. You can tell from old vlogs they did together that him and Noah were once really tight. Think about it, we've only dealt with Noah for a few years. Miles had to be the guy's brother during his high school years- arguably the time at which Noah's mondo autismo was crystalizing.
