Science 'Biohacker' Who Injected Himself with DIY Herpes Treatment Found Dead

The CEO of a biomedical startup who sparked controversy when he injected himself with an untested herpes treatment in front of a live audience in February has died, according to an email sent to Live Science.

Aaron Traywick, the CEO of Ascendance Biomedical, was found dead at 11:30 a.m. ET on Sunday (April 29) in a spa room in Washington, D.C., according to a statement provided to Live Science by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of the District of Columbia. Traywick was 28 years old.

According to the website News2Share.com, Traywick was found in a flotation tank. Flotation tanks are soundproof pods filled with body-temperature saltwater that are used to promote "sensory deprivation."

The MDP is still investigating Traywick's death, though they note that at this point, they have no evidence suggesting foul play.

Traywick made news in October 2017, when he staged a live demonstration of a purported gene-therapy treatment for HIV, Live Science previously reported. The untested treatment was given to a volunteer named Tristan Roberts who has HIV; Roberts said that one month after the injection, his viral load had risen, not fallen.

Shortly after that demonstration, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about using untested gene therapies, which read, in part, "FDA is aware that gene therapy products intended for self-administration and 'do it yourself' kits to produce therapies for self-administration are being made available to the public. The sale of these products is against the law. FDA is concerned about the safety risks involved."

Traywick and Roberts skirted this law, however, through self-experimentation — they weren't selling the products.

While I doubt that it was the injection is what killed him its going to cause a lot of buthurt in the I R VRY SMART parts of the internet, that tend to make up this community the Sodium Chloride is going to flow because of it and the spin is going to be spun through a centrifuge beforehand.

I looked up Aaron Traywick on Google and saw the term 'Businessperson'. Oddly enough, I've since lost all interest in this story, and need to go lie down for awhile. The day that a majority of first-world liberals care about issues that matter before arbitrary political terminology will be the day that Google is less malignant than herpes.

These mad scientist types always wind up found dead in embarrassing ways. You never hear of a guy who goes rogue and accidentally dissolved himself in acid or absorbs too many rads from a garage nuke he was making.

It's almost like you have to be a scientist, or a doctor, to actually BE a scientist, or a doctor.....

While I am not disagreeing with you there is this story of David Hahn and more recently Richard Handl.

There are a fair number of stories like those but they are more along the lines of "Inventor sets his house on fire" kind of stories, I mean if you recall the ill-fated Beagle 2 mission its mass spec unit was built by someone in a spare bedroom in surry, this was back in the late 90's and early 00's and even today it's a non-trivial exercise to do engage in.

This company is more championed by libertarians, ancaps and transhumanists. I would be sad to see this company go under after the CEO is dead. It's an interesting idea, as reckless as it might be (diy gene therapy).

More like a dumb mad scientist. The scientist who lacks common sense end up dead. He is stupid for the man. More like a thousand ways to die for scientist.

The Nuclear Boy Scout comes to mind. As a scout, he made a reactor in his backyard that would later be dismantled by the police. Then, as an adult, he was arrested for stealing smoke detectors; amassing tons of them in hopes to harvest the radioactive component and return to his boyhood glory.

But he died of alcohol poisoning and not rads

The original 'biohacker' was a weirdo called John Lilly who tried to teach dolphins to speak English by forcibly giving them LSD and having pretty women jerk them off.
