Listening to Bob causes extreme dissonance, because the only other times in your life that you've heard his kind of "Superior Future" rhetoric was when it came out of the mouth of a television villain (usually a WWII Nazi, and usually one that was physically fit and/or intimidating.) Seeing it come out of Bob's mouth feels...odd. It breaks several narrative laws, as if an insane person were trying to write a screenplay and mistakenly put "the guy who spilled his fries on me at McDonalds" in place of the main Bad Guy.

... I am deeply confused by all of the above. It's not a smart versus dumb thing when it comes to crime--it's just that most crimes are pretty simple ("I hate that guy," "I want that guy's stuff") and getting it sorted out is boring hard work. TV shows fall back on criminal masterminds because viewers find that more interesting than a realistic crime show, which would be fifty B&Es and domestic calls in a row.

Plus the entire model for nu-Star Wars doesn't work with that. The sequel trilogy sells itself on nostalgia so we're going to have to wait for a generation to go by for that sort of connection to hypothetically form but the problem there is we'd have over 30 fucking Star Wars movies by that point. I think the films would die in the west before then and even if Bob is right, he's talking about something that wouldn't be a factor until the next eventual revival of the series.

Second: the point that Star Wars is founded on nostalgia is doubly important. The original trilogy hearkened back to the fun, lighthearted adventure movies of the 30's and 40's. For those unaware, China spent most of the 30's and 40's fighting the Japanese, and in any case didn't have American adventure serials. Then the movies came about in the 70's, at which time the Chinese didn't pull in a lot of Western films. So the US, Europe, and some other places are nostalgic for Star Wars...But NOT China. Every Star Wars property since then has been trying to exploit nostalgia for the original trilogy. Nostalgia that the Chinese lack. It doesn't matter how hard they try, it's one of those things that's never going to catch on the way Disney wants it to. There's no "yet" Bob.

This, and China and Hong Kong especially have long-standing very successful film industries of their own largely on distribution within the Asian market. Jackie Chan had been making the big bucks for a good decade before Rumble in the Bronx made him a star in the west.
