Election stuffs happenin'

Enough time has passed from WW2 and the Nazis, so the Austrians are once again ready to embrace nationalist populism. The results are not fully complete as of this post, but it seems there's going to be a rather right-wing government.

They have a Green Party president, which is a bit funny, but he's basically just a figurehead.

Edit: oh dear, seems the Social Democrats are getting to the second place. Anyway, they're not winning, which is the most important thing.

The Austrians had previously a right-wing government in the early 2000s, it was reportedly not very functional, and there were EU sanctions against it. Because fuck democracy, nazis are evil!

Edit 2: the Freedom Party is narrowly leading the Social Democrats. Final results will be available on Thursday, when all the absentee ballots are counted.

It's not really more complicated than the US political spectrum, just different. Different social groups, different self-images and identities, different rifts between them. Different hegemonic cleavages, if you want to sound like an anthropology sperg.

The Austrian far right has a number of policy positions that look lefty from a US point of view. For example, the Freedom Party wants a stronger social safety net, including more public money for our single-payer health insurance system and more generous old age benefits. But it holds these positions for right-wing reasons as opposed to left-wing reasons. To oversimplify very badly, the FP is MUH GOOD OLD DAYS rather than MUH PROGRESS. It is also classically far right when it comes to issues such as immigration, law and order, church and state, guns, feminists, fags, trannies, or women in the workplace.

More importantly, it isn't just far right on most issues, it is far right in the sense that actually matters, the sociological sense. Its dominant factions are the old-school Nazi wing ("the Holocaust didn't happen, also it was really the Jews' fault anyway") and its modern populist wing ("we love Jews because they kill Muslims, also fuck Muslims"), and the Libertarian wing. Factional infighting can be brutal but their shared dislike for leftists always keeps them marching together in the end.

I know much of it looks crazy and paradoxical from the outside but hey, so does Murica.

In Europe 'far-right' means opposing open borders. There are swedish 'far right' parties that are pro-feminism, pro-gay rights, pro-socialism, etc. but they think its important for Sweden to have control over who comes into their country so they get labeled far right.

It becomes confusing because Islam and Shariah Law are considered liberal, despite how Shariah Law is just about as 'far right' as you can get.

It is only far right if whitey does it. Kebab can wear Swastikas and read Mein Kampf and will still be the left's sweetheart from the mosque up.
 
Speaking of the left, the Green Party didn't make it into parliament and the salty tears of some of the newspapers combined with the accompanying comment sections filled with happy people full of schadenfreude about the Tumblr-style Greens getting their ass handed to them was hilarious.
 
"Right wing" (rechts) in everyday German usage means Nazi. It's just the product of decade-long reeducation.
It's a slur.

Given that everything is turning Nazi now by MSM definition, they have introduced a shiny new thing called "rechtspopulistisch", suggesting you're not only Hitler, but Hitler preying on the mentally feeble (extending the insult to anyone who's following you).

Just something to keep in mind when reading German sources. It's all fluff and not to be taken at any face value.
 
It's funny, not too long ago it used to be the left that was anti-globalization, these days it's the right. This is slightly off topic but it is really weird how I haven't heard (m)any left-wingers complaining about sweatshops and the exploitation of workers for capitalist profit in the last few years. That's a good point they still could make but for some reason most of their focus is on gender bullshit, gay weddings and race right now.

That's because they don't give a shit about workers. They haven't for years but their open sneering contempt for the people whose labors they survive on has become increasingly clear and openly insulting. This is why their witch-candidate Hillary barely won in a rigged primary to an open socialist and why they lost to an orangutan.

Oddly enough, "unite against the upper classes oppressing us, regardless of race, creed, etc" isn't a very popular party line among Hillary Clinton and her ilk.
