Yeah, I'm thinking the same way. Part of me wants the Switch 2 but the way Nintendo prices their games and refuses to let them drop even when they've been out for years just pisses me off. I might grab an Xbox Series X and get some old games that I missed, but I've also got plenty of games I could platinum without needing to buy anything new.
I was tempted because the Donkey Kong game looked fun, but then I remembered I've only used my current Switch to play Gameboy/SNES games I could easily emulate so I bought a Steamdeck instead.
Be careful with that if you're talking about 360/OG Xbox titles. I bought a Series X thinking it was fully backwards compatible with the full Xbox library, but it's a relatively tiny selection of games and a lot of the best ones (like Tenchu Z which was never ported anywhere else) aren't included.
I wasn't planning on going that far back, I have a 360 that still works and Wikipedia has the list of games that are backwards compatible for that. I think Fable isn't backwards compatible for the X but is for the 360, which is weird but whatever. And funnily enough, Donkey Kong Bonanza was also on my list. I do play other things besides the Switch Online titles (And hey, they finally put Donkey Kong 64 on there) but that is my main thing. No idea why they don't put the other Sonic games on. And I want the old Pokemon games but they probably won't do those either. I partially wanted the Switch 2 for the Gamecube titles but they've barely put anything on there. They don't even have Mario Sunshine on there.
Oh yeah I wanted that too, but I think I already own all the Gamecube games I'd ever want to play and last I checked my Wii still works (have an actual Gamecube somewhere too but it's more hassle to set up).
I'm interested in the new Onimusha and Silent Hill games, but I won't be buying them for at least a year after release when they're cheaper, and maybe on PC by then if I decide to sell a kidney to fund a new graphics card.
I'm looking forward to a very packed October. I've been a lifelong gears fan, and E-Day impressed enough that assuming performance on PC is good enough on launch day, I'll be grabbing that. Same story with the new Ace Combat, and there's a handful of indie projects floating 'maybe' release windows out around end of year. And while there's no release date announced yet, the hope is that H3VR2 releases end of year or early next year, and as someone who still likes VR gaming and wants a steam frame, I'm looking forward to it.
The most fun I have had with gaming recently has been emulating old games from my childhood. Gaming for me has gone the way of a lot of other things where it resembles the thing you are expecting but just doesn't have the same intention or purpose. Old games were made by just fucking making a game and hoping. Whereas now they all feel like they had investors decide the core features before the development actually started. It used to feel that games would be sold on their merit whereas now they feel as if they're sold on how much time they will consume. Every game wants you to go do a grind every day and every game is a massive time investment and drawn out. Back in ye olde days games would try to be halo or cod or skyrim and so on, now they all want to be fucking mmos. I would much rather have a 7/10 that lasts five hours over the current trend of 4/10s that last for 100 hours. If I had to point at anything I would point at the order 1886, that's when I first really noticed the push for length instead of quality. Admittedly that game was painfully short and did deserve the criticism but it bled into other games too around that time. The thing with game length is that it doesn't matter because there's an endless number of games, the length desire is filled by other games. But obviously it's much easier and safer to try produce a bloated 4/10 than take a risk to try and produce something higher quality and just like every other facet of modern day life economic risk is something that will never be taken.
