This is actually a longstanding tradition in US politics. There are many such cases of wives and sons being appointed to a seat of a dead legislator at the state and federal level. Not sure it's ever happened with a governor position. Usually it's just to quickly fill the seat and honor the dead guy, and there's an election as soon as legal. In a few cases the appointee runs and make something of themselves in the position, IIRC.
