The problem the liberals had with blaming China was that Trump was constantly downplaying the virus as the China virus as if that implies we don't have to do anything about it because it should be China's problem. He said it would go away by April 2020. It's like saying AIDS came from Africa so no one in the US should use condoms.
There had been stockpiled supplies in case of a pandemic, but Trump had got rid of that. So people were initially told not to use up what supplies we had, they were needed for medical workers. This lead to people hoarding supplies like masks and hand sanitizer and toilet paper. When there were enough supplies for widespread masking, people became angry because they had been told not to mask initially and then they were being told to mask, while Trump himself refused to mask, probably because he didn't want to mess up his makeup. Many people who did wear a mask decided to pull it down around their chin, making it pointless, so thanks to them people came to the conclusion that masks do nothing.
One idea that still spreads today, six years later, is that the masks can't block the virus because the virus is smaller than the gaps in the fibers in the mask. This completely ignores the idea that the virus is transmitted in droplets that are often blocked by the mask, but that's too much for a lot of people.
