Something was definitely wrong with the guy - and he knew it. He tried to get mental help three days before the massacre but was ignored. The problem with the "chicken nuggets" theory is that he was already heavily armed and on his safari long before he got to the McDonalds. The part about 13 years of fumes from his welder's job made more sense, but the case was dismissed in 1987.
The McDonalds was torn down and made into a park. There's a memorial to the victims on the spot.
