A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Another 20% want the ineffective "lite" versions of the policies that will in effect give us more of the same.
So that leaves roughly the final 25% ( bad maths ) that actually want people who don't share our values and don't contribute repatriated.

I can only see a gridlocked system. I don't see it being resolved. Things will have to get worse before the war comes. I do wonder how quickly the breaking down of our infrastructure will happen. The power supply is an immediate worry, transport and food supply chains, water and sanitation, hospitals are all struggling under the strain of being designed for far fewer people.

In all honesty I think the guy you talk about is way down on the list of concerns. Get rid of the 10 million or so that are like a rock tied around our necks dragging us under the water first. But one policy won't work in isolation, there is so much that needs to be done simultaneously to fix this. Reform absolutely don't have the stones, motivation, understanding or sadly the right people in its party to do this. If they are voted in, it will only lead to more disappointment.

Plus, how are the third that love the current situation going to behave ? Will they respect the vote ? Will Starmer respect the vote ?! Will he even allow an election to take place ?!!

I think it's because they know everything is NOT fine that they send their kids to public school and so would others, if they could afford it.
The problem is why are so many comprehensive schools not up to scratch ? Could they be microcosms of their societies ? Is that possibly too bigger problem for the parents of a school age child with aspirations of doing better to change ?

I liked the grammar school system. I don't see what the issue is with educating people in accordance with their needs / abilities. That would then produce the real university calibre students, with technical / trade schools for others and practical lessons in life ( hygiene and general living / meal preparation / basic banking and finance - how to live and be independent ) for the next tranche. But a meritocracy - nobody can buy their way in - if you don't have the grades, it doesn't matter if Daddy wants to donate enough money to build a new gym.

I already think this is happening, to an extent. There are multiple "[X group] are training, so why aren't you?" posts on socials for communist groups, neo-nazis, nativists, Sikhs, Muslims, etc, all men going gym or hiking and camping etc. The sikh debacle resulted in a few posts about how the sikh community needs to "train and stick together", the Digwas were already armed to the teeth. Crowborough has the safety patrols, Manchester men are doing the anti-clean up crew patrols and films, nonce hunters who target pakis exclusively, multiple black gangs in London, the Kurdish mini mart mafia.... etc etc. I saw a few wishful thinking posts about how Restore needs to create its own police force now we know the UK police are corrupt which got a lot of traction, which glowed like crazy, but the sentiment is still there.

1: The civil services are basically the ones that run the country ya big numpty.
2: Not really jealousy, I managed to get pretty fair with a really shitty state school (top university education and all that, better than most who'd go private. And even then, it was horrible. One of the most notable things being in a lecture where one of the lecturers, white, went on about FGM but decided to call it Female Genital Cutting bc bias). But I saw people who basically drowned because they had to go to it. Not that I liked them, but I digress.

Just a day or two before I saw the viral Frank Wright interview, I had started re-watching Adam Curtis' Century of the Self series. Pretty surreal to see Wright now, since he is both bringing up a lot of the same points from the Curtis docs, and he also kind of sounds like Curtis (to a non-British ESL ear, at least...).

Your assessment is correct. Around 75% of voters are in favour of preserving current state of things or in favour of increasing migration. People here may want to bury their head in the sand, but outside of small echo chambers online, that is the mainstream opinion.

Nothing will change it. Grooming gangs, dodgy main street shops, all flavour of the month horrific stories on the news did not sway the public. If those did not change public perception, then nothing will.

Device level controls already exist, Starmer is proposing making it the default and if you want it turned off you have to send the government your ID
