I was thinking about how far things have gone and its honestly insane the more I really look back. When I was a kid, there were 0 Indian kids in my school. Not a single one from preschool through jr high. There were a few in high school, but not many and they were fairly normal. In pre-modern times, when a bad winter could nuke your crops or animals, having excess fat on you meant that you could produce milk for your babies during harsher times when food was more scarce. You were more likely to survive and so were your children. Both skinny women and fat women have fertility issues. The "twiggy aesthetic" wasn't about reproductive health. These days we don't have to fight for calories, so beauty is more linked with social status.

Coco Chanel oopsie popularized tanning in the 20's as an act of the leisure class. Yes, being tanned was a beauty standard linked with social status. It resurfaced in the 80's and 90's until heavy tanning was linked with skin cancer. Sorta like smoking.
