How Redditors Save Money on Groceries

Gas and airfare are not the only prices surging at the moment. Grocery prices saw a 0.7% jump from March to April, with beef pricesresuming their record climb and tomatoes climbing 15.1% in a single month — and 39.7% in the last year, according to the latest CPI report.
With higher prices making shoppers anxious, we took a deep dive into Reddit sentiment to see how people are making food shopping more affordable. We used an AI tool to help analyze and summarize responses. People post anonymously, so we cannot confirm their individual experiences or circumstances.
Here are some common strategies:
  • Reverse meal plan: Check what you have on hand at home and look for recipes that include those ingredients.
  • Have an “Eat Everything” night: Designate one night a week to polish off leftovers or make a big soup or stew from produce on its last legs. Some users take one week per month to eat only what’s in the house to clear out pantry food.
  • Use free pickup services: Ordering groceries ahead for free pickup reduces impulse shopping and allows you to see the full price of your cart before you check out. Another strategy: Shop with a basket if you only need a few things.
  • Hit stores strategically: Try ethnic grocery stores for cheaper spices, produce and staples like rice or beans.
  • Keep an inventory sheet: A physical or digital list of what’s in your freezer and pantry prevents duplicate buying, which can lead to wasted food.
  • Stretch your protein: Make your meat go further by replacing part of it with lentils, finely chopped mushrooms, grated carrots or zucchini, or even oats.
  • Keep an emergency meal in the freezer.Stash a frozen pizza or frozen burritos for the nights when you’re too tired to cook — it will save you the $50 Door Dash.

Eat mostly starches. Bet you niggas dont even know how to make ghetto chili

Ghetto Chili:

Peel and slice some potatoes. The thinner the better since the potato starch is what's going to thicken this up. Add skim milk and noodles and let simmer over low heat while covered, stirring often. We're going to get a gravy-ish broth here, so if it starts getting too thin leave uncovered for a bit to evaporate or add more noodles. You can add butter or oil if you'd like, I try to avoid it unless the noodles are really sticking.

Once it's thickened a bit add pepper. Shit tons of it. And a little salt, too. Stir it very well, and it should become a sort of disgusting gray color. Taste often to achieve target. Add veggies if you like.
Consider adding very thinly sliced onions as well (Caramelized or not but caramelized would probably be better for this)

Don't DoorDash anything, idiots, buy your own cunting groceries. Half these people don't work.
Recently, I did a Door dash, as in I was the delivery driver, for someone who did nearly 200 bucks worth of groceries. I can not imagine how much it would rape you on the other side of the screen from me for that.

Also, get your own 40 packs of bottled water and break your own goddamn back.

It's not that bad. I did this a few times through my local grocery store. It ends up being like 18 dollars more. I haven't done it in more than a year so I don't know if the fees are more now. It's worth it when you have no time and have a Catholic amount of children like me so an extra 20 is like a drop in a bucket for the amount of groceries.

When your entire diet is cum and what ever your mom brings down to the basement goon zone it's free to eat!

But it's reddit

We rarely ever end up with spoiled food. Even though we have plenty of money we can't ever fathom using delivery. I mean, you see the people picking groceries? It's a bunch of fat beaners and when you order two dozen little Chobanis they just throw them all helter skelter in the cart and don't even look at the expiration date. Then they throw the box of La Croix on top. It's just such a stupid, wasteful ecosystem. This sort of thing used to be to help the elderly, not millennials and younger who whine about UBI.

I also don't understand these little tricks to fool yourself into thriftiness. Like, just don't buy trash you don't need. I became so much healthier when I left home simply because I didn't buy all the treat food my parents kept around. What the fuck kind of will power do these people have?

I really don't understand how people will have regular issue with this - Maybe I'm the weird one with a set grocery day, but because of it, I know exactly how many meals I need to buy for, and canned/frozen items act as a buffer if something turns before its best by. There's only so many dinners between two runs, so this pack of meat is gonna be X meals, so then I grab some main options for the other days, repeat the same for breakfast, lunch, and pick up something to prep for snacks too. Build out the whole plan with the online flyer before heading out, and its all set. The most trashing that ever happens is me missing that a reserve can of soup went off, which is hardly a loss when its the cheap campbells condensed that I keep around for if I get sick.

Its also not hard to think ahead and buffer out - when family packs of meat go on sale, I buy a couple, portion and freeze them, and then for the next however long, I can break up any potential monotony in my menu by slipping in a few steaks, or chicken, or pork. Same goes for long life staples like cabbage, potato, onion, etc. I dunno, it just doesn't seem very hard to me, I'm lazy as fuck and this turned into the optimal strategy because I found that delivery or flying by the seat of my pants menu planning lead to just frequent frustration, and paying a premium specifically to be pissed off. Food app drivers are retarded, but I'll always cook a good porkchop. Food app drivers take 30 fucking minutes to figure out how roads work, but I can cook a steak in less than half that.

The whole thing is a paradox where you're actually getting screwed in both quality and cost for trying to offload the work.

Was expecting tips on how to steal from white heterosexual male cisgendered run corporate chains because as a marginalized redditor they are owed reparations and food is a human right to the disadvantaged.

I stretch my protein every night I don't see the issue.
Fatal mistake, youre supposed to smoosh it. This is what most women screw up with handjobs/blow jobs, a vagina gives gentle and moist resistance, not the sensation of a capuchin trying to pull a banana off a tree.

I expected "have your wife boyfriend take her and his child to eat".

I don't know if saving few dollars is worth risk being stabbed by a beaner. In general the fuel outweights the cost of traveling to multiple specific place unless they are bunched together.
Every time I hear "my wife's boyfriend" I just want to scream into my pillow.

I save on meat by stocking the floor freezer with venison and wild turkey. A resident license and a couple rounds of ammo is cheap enough, and a good friend is a professional game processor so I get a deal on that. Game meat can be excellent if done right.
