I think what a lot of the people who assume (based on what Catholic aesthetics they've seen online, or what they watch in media perhaps) that Catholicism in the US is this mega-based & trad force that people should be happy to retvrn to forget/don't know about, and what the likes of Nick Fuentes definitely don't know or do know but want to hide, is that American Catholics were historically staunchly liberal-aligned and Democratic voters until pretty recently.

They also don't understand that "trad" Catholicism taught that all governments must be subject to the pope, and heretics are to be killed. Modern Catholicism is a religion in identity crisis. It has two conflicting teachings:

1. The teaching of Catholic Church has never changed in any meaningful way
2. Much of what Catholic authorities taught from 400AD through 1962 was wrong, including nearly everything they said about church, state, and family matters.

"Trad" Catholicism is an affect, a surface veneer. Actual medievalist traditionalism, which demands all governments submit to the pope and all heretics be put to the sword, is completely incompatible with the American project and in point of fact died on the battlefields of the Thirty Years' War. The governing theological concepts of the Middle Ages are dead today. Nobody really believes in them any more, and anyone who pretends they do just comes off as a massive faggot.

Modern conservative Catholicism - your Rubios and Alitos - is still theologically liberal. It's just John Henry Newman liberalism rather than James Martin liberalism, but the latter does depend on the former to give it intellectual foundation.
